### 與賀圅伯戶部

> Yu He Han Bo Hu Bu

山中得奉手書。知道味日深。世情日遠。且以楞伽究心。遊泳智海。觀察流注妄想。久之澄徹淵源。是則借彼逆緣。為進道之資矣。所不足者。苦無明眼知識。相伴提撕。恐於文言滯礙。大段此事。以教印心。如蜂採華。但取其味。不損其色。故凡有看教典。及古德機緣。會心處領略。不會則置之。勿自穿鑿。久自融通。則言言冥合真心矣。政不必以不會作障礙也。公賦性高明。當此妙齡。精力有餘。能蚤收攝如此。不唯蹈大方坦途。且為福壽之資。天之所以成公者大矣。幸自保愛。以副區區厚望。

> Having received your letter in the mountains, I can see that your understanding of the Way grows deeper each day, while your attachment to worldly affairs fades further away. Moreover, you have devoted yourself to studying the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra, contemplating the ocean of wisdom and observing the flowing stream of discursive thoughts. In time, as these settle into clarity, the depths of the source will become clear. In this way, you are turning those challenging circumstances into fuel for your progress on the path. What you lack, however, is a discerning teacher of wisdom to guide you side by side, and so you may find yourself stuck on certain words and concepts. But in the grand scheme of this matter, the scriptures serve to seal the mind, much like a bee gathering nectar—it takes only the flavor without harming the flower's bloom. Therefore, whenever you read Buddhist texts or encounter the insightful exchanges of the old masters, absorb whatever resonates with your heart, and set aside what does not, without forcing interpretations. In time, everything will merge naturally, and every word will align with the true mind. There is no need to treat confusion as an obstacle. Given your natural brilliance, and at this prime age with abundant energy, the fact that you have already taken up the practice so earnestly is remarkable. Not only are you treading the broad path of liberation, but you are also cultivating the roots of good fortune and longevity. Heaven's intent in shaping you is indeed great. Please take care of yourself, so that you may fulfill the hopes I hold for you.
