The *Brief Commentary on the Treatise of Sengzhao* is a commentary by the eminent Ming dynasty monk Deqing on the *Treatise of Sengzhao* by the Eastern Jin monk Sengzhao. Deqing, one of the four great monks of the late Ming period, was well-versed in both Buddhist and Confucian studies. His commentary integrates Chan and Huayan thought, offering profound insights into the core teachings of the *Treatise*, such as the prajñā view of emptiness and the doctrine of the non-movement of things. With clear and concise language, it elucidates Sengzhao's discourses on Madhyamaka philosophy, making it an essential text for the study of Chinese Buddhist intellectual history. As a representative work of Chinese Buddhist exegesis, the *Brief Commentary on the Treatise of Sengzhao* preserves the speculative depth of Sengzhao's original work while reflecting the interpretive characteristics of Ming dynasty Buddhism. It holds a pivotal position in the development of Buddhist doctrinal studies, serving as a bridge between earlier and later traditions.
