### 鐵山瓊禪師傳補

南嶽鐵山瓊禪師。十八出家。二十二薙髮受具。先到石霜。記得祥庵主云。時時觀見鼻頭白。從此下工。便得清淨。及見雪巖坐禪箴。始知工夫未當。乃往見雪巖于仰山。一依所示用工。一日忽覺。從頭至足。如擘破髑髏相似。如萬丈井底被提出。在空中相似。舉似巖。巖曰。未在。更去做工夫。求得法語。末句云。紹隆佛祖向上事。腦後依然欠一槌。巖順世。師以離巖太早。再謁蒙山。山問。參禪到甚麼處。是畢工處。師罔然。山教做定力工夫。洗盪塵習。每遇入室下語。只道欠在。一日以定力挨拶。直造幽微。出定舉似山。山問。那個是你本來面目。正欲下語。山便閉門。自此工夫日有玅處。但入室下語。猶道欠在。一日定中。忽觸著欠字。身心豁然。如積雪卒然開霽。忍俊不禁。跳下單來。擒住山曰。我欠個甚麼。山打三掌。師禮三拜。山曰。鐵山這一著子幾年。今日方了。後住南嶽。道風大播。高麗國王。請為國師。聲振海外。後復還石霜。嗣雪巖焉。千巖長公。䟦師開示語曰。鐵山和尚。一條硬脊骨。抝不折。親承仰山慧朗老人之記。為高麗一國之師。登其門。升其堂。無慮億萬計。是為南嶽下二十一世。贊曰。

> Zen Master Qiong of Tieshan in Nanyue. He left home at eighteen. At twenty-two, his head was shaved and he received full ordination. First, he went to Shishuang. He remembered the words of Master Xiang'an: "Constantly observe the whiteness at the tip of your nose. Apply effort from this point, and you will attain purity." Later, upon seeing Xueyan's "Admonition on Seated Meditation," he realized his practice was not yet proper. So he went to see Xueyan at Yangshan and diligently applied the effort as instructed. One day, he suddenly felt as if his body, from head to toe, was like a skull being split open. It was as if he had been pulled up from the bottom of a ten-thousand-foot well and was suspended in mid-air. He reported this to Xueyan. Xueyan said, "Not yet. Go back and continue your practice." He sought a Dharma verse from him, the last line of which read: "To carry on the supreme matter of the Buddhas and Patriarchs, there is still a blow lacking at the back of the head." After Xueyan passed away, the Master felt he had left Xueyan too early. He went to pay respects to Mengshan. Mengshan asked, "In Zen practice, what point marks its completion?" The Master was at a loss. Mengshan taught him to practice the work of stabilizing power, to wash away and cleanse his habitual dust. Each time he entered the chamber to present his understanding, Mengshan would only say, "Something is lacking." One day, through the stabilizing power of his practice, he pressed on until he reached the profound and subtle. Coming out of concentration, he reported this to Mengshan. Mengshan asked, "What is your original face?" Just as he was about to speak, Mengshan closed the door. From then on, his practice daily reached wondrous points. But whenever he entered the chamber to present his understanding, Mengshan would still say, "Something is lacking." One day in concentration, he suddenly encountered the word "lacking." His body and mind opened up in an instant, like accumulated snow suddenly clearing under bright sunshine. Unable to contain his joy, he jumped down from his seat, grabbed Mengshan and said, "What is it that I lack?" Mengshan struck him three times. The Master bowed three times. Mengshan said, "This move of Tieshan's—how many years has it been? Today it is finally completed." Later, he resided at Nanyue, where his way and influence spread widely. The King of Goryeo invited him to be National Teacher, and his reputation shook lands beyond the sea. Later, he returned again to Shishuang. He was a successor in the lineage of Xueyan. The elder Qianyan, in a postscript to the Master's instructional words, said: "Venerable Tieshan—one unyielding spine that cannot be broken. He personally received the prediction from the old man Huilang of Yangshan, became the teacher for the entire kingdom of Goryeo, and those who entered his gate and ascended his hall were beyond counting. He is the twenty-first generation in the lineage from Nanyue." A verse in praise says:
