Twelve Gates Treatise (十二門論)

Chapter 9: Contemplating Cause and Effect

Furthermore, all phenomena are empty. Why? Because things have no inherent nature of their own, nor do they come from anywhere else. As it is said:

In the midst of conditions, The fruit is ultimately nowhere to be found, Nor does it come from elsewhere— How then could it exist?

If, among the various causes—whether considered individually or in combination—no fruit is found, as explained earlier, then this fruit does not come from elsewhere. If it did come from elsewhere, it would not be born from causes and conditions, nor would there be any effect of their combined effort. Since the fruit is neither present in the causes themselves nor does it arise from somewhere else, it is therefore empty.
