The Vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, composed by the eminent Sui dynasty monk Zhiyi, stands as one of the essential scriptures in Chinese Buddhism. Zhiyi, the founder of the Tiantai school, imbued this text with the core principles of Samantabhadra's practices within Mahāyāna Buddhism. Structured around the Ten Great Kingly Vows, the text expounds upon the vast vows of a bodhisattva to universally deliver all sentient beings. These encompass devotional practices such as paying homage to all Buddhas, praising the Thus-Come Ones, and making extensive offerings. Held in the highest esteem within Buddhism, this vow-text is regarded as a practical guide to the bodhisattva path and has profoundly influenced later schools including the Pure Land and Huayan traditions. Its content is concise and profound, its language elegant. It serves both as a daily recitation text for practitioners and as a vital document for studying the bodhisattva spirit in Mahāyāna Buddhism.

Samantabhadra Bodhisattva's Vows

Tiantai Great Master Zhiyi

I bow with utmost reverence to all Buddhas of the ten directions and three times. May you bear witness: I, [Name], now resolve to cultivate all the perfections practiced by the Buddhas, just as they did. I earnestly pray that all Tathagatas, in your compassion, will kindly remember me.

Grant me the strength to make my aspiration for Enlightenment firm and unshakable. Grant me the strength of deep faith in the inconceivable Dharma of the Buddhas. Grant me the strength of unfailing memory amidst vast learning. Grant me the strength of untiring vigor through the cycles of birth and death. Grant me the strength of steadfast great compassion toward all beings. Grant me the strength of resolute generosity in giving. Grant me the strength of unbreakable purity in upholding precepts. Grant me the strength of enduring patience in forbearance. Grant me the strength of wisdom that no demon can destroy. Grant me the strength of joyful faith in the profound Dharma.

**First**, I vow that throughout all my future lives and in all situations, I will constantly make offerings to all Buddhas of the ten directions, without cease for all future time.

**Second**, I vow to receive and uphold the vast ocean of the Tathagata's profound Dharma, comprehending it clearly myself without relying on others, without cease for all future time.

**Third**, wherever Buddhas attain Enlightenment and sit upon the seat of awakening, I vow to be foremost among those who gather and uphold the Dharma, requesting them to turn the Wheel of Dharma to liberate beings, without cease for all future time.

**Fourth**, I vow to practice all the boundless and vast vows of the Bodhisattvas, without cease for all future time.

**Fifth**, I vow to teach and guide all beings—whether born from eggs, wombs, moisture, or transformation—and lead them all to enter complete Nirvana, without cease for all future time.

**Sixth**, I vow that the Buddha-lands will appear before me as clearly as if I were facing them, without cease for all future time.

**Seventh**, I vow to adorn and purify the profound oceans of Buddha-lands of all Tathagatas, without cease for all future time.

**Eighth**, I vow to practice together with all Bodhisattvas, accumulating roots of goodness, without cease for all future time.

**Ninth**, I vow that all my actions of body, speech, and mind, whenever seen or heard by beings, will bring them benefit, like the King of Medicinal Trees that never fails to heal, without cease for all future time.

**Tenth**, I vow to attain Perfect Enlightenment in every single dust-mote realm, turn the great Wheel of Dharma, and liberate beings, without cease for all future time.

O child of the Buddha, if one can give rise to these Ten Great Vows, one simultaneously gives rise to the doors of a hundred million asamkhyeya vows. May these vast and profound vows and all roots of goodness be dedicated to all beings. May they forever be free from the sufferings of the three lower realms and perfectly fulfill the practices and vows of Samantabhadra Bodhisattva.

I also dedicate these roots of goodness toward Supreme Enlightenment, not seeking worldly rewards or the fruits of the Two Vehicles.

I also dedicate these roots of goodness toward the ocean of the True Suchness Dharma Realm—the True Suchness that is undying, free from outflows, unconditioned, and indestructible. May my roots of goodness be just like this. As all Buddhas of the three times dedicate merit, so do I dedicate merit.

Having made this dedication, I take refuge in and pay homage to the Triple Gem.
