Guanyin's Secret Wish-Fulfilling Dharani Sutra

除破一切惡業陀羅尼品第一
Chapter 1: The Dharani for Destroying All Evil Karma
如是我聞：
Thus I have heard:
一時佛在伽栗斯山，與大菩薩眾俱。爾時觀世音菩薩摩訶薩即從座起，整衣服，胡跪合掌白佛言：「世尊！我有大陀羅尼法，名摩訶波頭摩栴檀摩尼心輪，能於一切事所求皆得成就。若如來大慈悲許我說者，我當承佛神力，為饒益一切眾生故說。所以者何？世尊！此陀羅尼有大神力，猶如摩尼寶亦如如意樹，能滿一切願。」爾時世尊讚觀世音菩薩言：「善哉善哉！汝已慈悲故，為眾生能如是問。聽汝無障礙說此陀羅尼。」觀世音菩薩既蒙聽許，即起合掌作禮還本坐處，諦觀眾會，具大慈悲，即說呪曰：
At that time, the Buddha was dwelling on Mount Garlic, accompanied by a great assembly of bodhisattvas. Then the great bodhisattva Guanyin rose from his seat, adjusted his robes, knelt on his right knee, joined his palms, and said to the Buddha: "World-Honored One, I possess a great dharani method called the Mahā Padma Candana Maṇi Cakra (Great Lotus Sandalwood Jewel Heart Wheel). It can bring success in all endeavors. If the Tathāgata, out of great compassion, allows me to explain it, I shall, empowered by the Buddha, teach it for the benefit of all beings. Why is that? World-Honored One, this dharani has great spiritual power; it is like a wish-fulfilling jewel or a wish-granting tree, able to fulfill all aspirations." The World-Honored One then praised Guanyin Bodhisattva, saying: "Excellent, excellent! Out of compassion, you have asked this for the sake of beings. I grant you leave to explain this dharani without hindrance." Having received permission, Guanyin Bodhisattva rose, joined his palms, bowed, returned to his seat, and with great compassion, gazed upon the assembly and spoke the mantra.
「那(上)謨曷囉(二合)怛那(二合)怛囉(二合)夜耶(一)那謨阿唎耶(二)婆路咭帝攝伐(二合)囉耶(三)菩提薩埵跛耶(四)摩訶薩埵跛耶(五)摩訶迦盧尼迦耶(六)怛姪他(七)唵(八)斫迦羅伐底栴檀摩尼(九)摩訶鉢頭迷(十)嚧嚧底瑟咤(十一)遮伐囉阿曷囉(二合)(十二)舍鳴𤙖泮莎婆(二合)呵(十三)」
Homage to the Three Jewels! Homage to the noble Avalokiteshvara, the bodhisattva and great being, full of great compassion. Thus it goes: Om! King of the wheel-turning sandalwood jewel! Great lotus! Luminous, brilliant one! Blazing radiance! Hail and praise!
已上是身呪。
Above is the Body Mantra.
「唵(一)鉢頭迷(二)栴檀摩尼(三)摩訶遮伐囉吽(引)(四)」
"Om, Padme, Candana Mani, Maha Jvala Hum."
已上是心呪。
This is the Heart Mantra.
「唵(一)伐囉(二合)哆(二)鉢頭迷(三)吽(引)(四)」
Om, Vajra Padme Hum.
爾時觀世音菩薩說此如意輪陀羅尼已，大地六種震動，天、龍、夜叉、乾闥婆、阿修羅、迦樓羅、緊那羅、摩睺羅伽等宮殿悉皆震動，魔王及諸魔眾生大驚怖，魔王宮殿皆悉火起。自餘種類夜叉惡鬼，並皆惶懼仆面倒地。一切地獄門開，罪人解脫受天勝樂。爾時天雨寶華及種種寶莊嚴具，諸天音樂在虛空中出種種聲供養如來。爾時世尊以梵音聲，說偈讚觀世音菩薩摩訶薩言：
Then the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara had finished teaching this Wish-Fulfilling Wheel Dharani, the earth trembled in six different ways. The palaces of devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and others all shook. King Mara and all his demonic forces were struck with great terror, and fire erupted throughout Mara's palaces. All other kinds of evil yakshas and malicious spirits fell to the ground in fear. The gates of every hell burst open, and all the condemned beings were released and experienced the supreme bliss of the heavens.
At that time, celestial flowers rained down, along with various precious ornaments. Divine music filled the sky, producing all kinds of sounds in offering to the Tathagata. Then the World-Honored One, with his Brahma-like voice, spoke this verse to praise the Great Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara:
「善哉善哉！ 汝善男子！ 愍念眾生，
說陀羅尼， 能令眾生， 得大勝益。」
"Excellent, excellent! Good man, out of compassion for all beings,
You have taught this dhāraṇī, which can bring them great and supreme benefit."
爾時世尊復告觀世音菩薩言：「善男子！能為諸眾生故，說此大神通王陀羅尼法。」時觀世音菩薩白佛言：「若有善男子善女人、比丘、比丘尼、優婆塞、優婆夷、童男童女，於此生中欲求現報，當於晝夜一心精勤，不忘此陀羅尼者，亦不簡擇時日、淨與不淨，若誦得已即有成驗。凡所求事，當誦一百八遍，即百千事成，更無別有神呪及此如意輪王陀羅尼者。所以者何？過去現在惡業重障悉能破壞。若能誦此陀羅尼，應墮阿鼻地獄，即得解脫。五逆等罪亦悉滅除，何況其餘惡業及諸厄難一切疾病。若熱病一日二日三日四日若晝若夜，若風黃痰癊等病，誦此呪者悉得除愈。若被蠱毒厭禱、丁瘡疥癩瘑痒、風狂頭痛，及耳鼻脣舌牙齒咽喉、口面頭腦胸脇心腹、腰背脚手頭足等痛，悉得除差。但是身中有病皆悉治之。若夜叉、羅剎、毘那夜迦、惡魔鬼神悉不能害。亦不畏刀兵水火、惡風雨雹，怨家劫盜、惡王惡賊終不能害亦不橫死。及諸惡夢、蚖蛇蝮蠍、守宮百足蜘蛛，諸惡毒獸師子虎狼悉不能害。兵鬪戰陣皆得勝利，若有官事諍訟皆得和解。若誦此陀羅尼一遍，如上等事悉得遂意。若日日誦此陀羅尼一百八遍，見觀世音菩薩告言：『汝善男子等勿怖。欲求何願，一切施汝。』阿彌陀佛自現其身，見極樂世界莊嚴之事如經中說，亦見極樂世界諸菩薩眾，亦見十方一切諸佛，亦見觀世音菩薩所居住處補怛羅山，即得自身清淨，常為諸王公卿宰相恭敬供養眾人愛敬，所生之處不處母胎，生蓮花上微妙莊嚴。在所生處常得宿命。始從今日乃至成佛，終不墮惡道常生佛前。」
At that time, the World-Honored One again addressed the Bodhisattva Guanyin, saying: "Excellent being! For the sake of all sentient beings, you have spoken this Dharma of the Great Supernatural Power King Dharani." Then Bodhisattva Guanyin said to the Buddha: "If there are good men, good women, monks, nuns, laymen, laywomen, boys, or girls who wish to see direct results in this very life, they should diligently practice single-mindedly day and night, never forgetting this Dharani. They need not select auspicious days or worry about purity or impurity. Once it is recited, there will be immediate results. For any matter they wish to accomplish, reciting it one hundred and eight times will make hundreds and thousands of matters succeed. There is no other mantra or Dharani that compares to this Wish-Fulfilling Wheel King Dharani. Why? Because it can destroy all heavy karmic obstructions from the past and present. Those who recite this Dharani, even if destined for the Avici Hell, will be freed. Crimes like the five heinous offenses are completely eliminated—how much more so other evil karma, disasters, and all illnesses!
"Whether it be fevers lasting one, two, three, or four days, whether by day or night, or illnesses caused by wind, bile, or phlegm—all such diseases are cured by reciting this mantra. If someone is afflicted by sorcery, curses, boils, leprosy, scabies, itching, madness, headaches, or pains in the ears, nose, lips, tongue, teeth, throat, mouth, face, brain, chest, ribs, heart, abdomen, back, waist, hands, feet, head, or any part of the body—all are healed. Any disease within the body is cured. Yakshas, rakshasas, vinayakas, and all evil ghosts and spirits cannot harm them. They need not fear weapons, fire, water, storms, hail, enemies, bandits, cruel kings, or wicked thieves—none can harm them, nor will they die prematurely. Evil dreams, poisonous snakes, scorpions, geckos, centipedes, spiders, and all deadly beasts—lions, tigers, wolves—cannot harm them. In battles and military conflicts, they will be victorious. In legal disputes and quarrels, they will reach reconciliation. Reciting this Dharani just once brings success in all the above matters.
"If one recites this Dharani one hundred and eight times daily, Bodhisattva Guanyin will appear and say: 'Good man or woman, do not be afraid. Whatever wish you have, I will grant it all.' Amitabha Buddha will then appear in person, and one will see the glorious adornments of the Land of Ultimate Bliss, just as described in the scriptures. One will also see the assembly of bodhisattvas there, as well as all the Buddhas in the ten directions. One will see Bodhisattva Guanyin's dwelling place, Mount Potalaka. At that moment, one becomes pure in body, always respected and served by kings, officials, and ministers, and loved by all. Wherever one is reborn, it will not be from a womb, but born on a lotus flower, exquisitely adorned, and one will always retain memory of past lives. From this day until the attainment of Buddhahood, one will never fall into evil realms but will always be born in the presence of the Buddhas."
