Chapter 6: The Infinite Noble Truths
"World-Honored One! When those who hear the teaching (śrāvakas) and those who attain enlightenment through conditions (pratyekabuddhas) first observe the Noble Truths, they use a single wisdom to cut through all abodes of defilement. With that same single wisdom, they accomplish the fourfold cutting off, the fourfold understanding, the fourfold merit, and the fourfold realization, and they also deeply understand the meaning of these four principles.
World-Honored One! There is no supramundane supreme wisdom that operates through gradual attainment of the four wisdoms or through gradual reliance on the four conditions. There is no gradual method; the supramundane supreme wisdom is beyond gradual progression."
"World-Honored One! The vajra-like wisdom is the wisdom of ultimate truth. World-Honored One! Because Hearers and Solitary Realizers have not cut off the abode of ignorance, the wisdom of the initial noble truth is the wisdom of ultimate truth. World-Honored One! It is through the non-dual wisdom of the noble truth that all abodes are cut off. World-Honored One! The Thus-Come One, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One, is beyond the realm of all Hearers and Solitary Realizers. Through the inconceivable wisdom of emptiness, all defilement stores are cut off. World-Honored One! The wisdom that thoroughly destroys all defilement stores and reaches the ultimate is called the wisdom of ultimate truth. The wisdom of the initial noble truth is not the ultimate wisdom; it is the wisdom that leads toward supreme perfect enlightenment."
"World-Honored One! The 'Noble' refers not to all śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas. Śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas accomplish limited merit and partial virtue, hence they are called noble. The Noble Truth is neither the truth of śrāvakas and pratyekabuddhas, nor their merit. World-Honored One! This Truth was first realized by the Tathāgata, the Worthy One, the Perfectly Enlightened One. Then, for the world shrouded in the shell of ignorance, He revealed, explained, and proclaimed it. Therefore, it is called the Noble Truth."
