Śrīmālādevī Siṃhanāda Sūtra (勝鬘師子吼一乘大方便方廣經)

Chapter 15: Queen Shrimala

"Other beings who cling rigidly to false teachings on these profound truths, who turn away from the true Dharma, and who follow the corrupt seed of external paths—these should be guided and subdued through the strength of the king, as well as the power of devas, dragons, and spirits."

At that time, Shou-man and her retinue bowed their heads at the Buddha's feet. The Buddha said: "Excellent, excellent. Shou-man! You have skillfully safeguarded the profound Dharma, subdued what is not the Dharma, and acted most appropriately. You have drawn near a hundred thousand million Buddhas, and now you are able to expound this meaning."

At that time, the World-Honored One emitted a splendid light that illuminated the entire assembly, rose into the air to the height of seven tala trees, and walked through the sky back to the city of Shravasti. Meanwhile, Queen Shrimala and her attendants pressed their palms together toward the Buddha, gazing upon him without ever growing weary, their eyes never shifting away. Even after he had passed beyond their sight, they leaped with joy, each praising the Tathagata’s virtues and reciting the Buddha’s name with full devotion. Then they returned to the city to tell King Youcheng about the Great Vehicle. In the city, women aged seven and above were taught the Great Vehicle. King Youcheng, likewise, guided all the men, those seven and older, so that the entire kingdom turned toward the Mahayana path.

At that time, the World-Honored One entered the Jeta Grove and addressed the elder Ananda, and also thought of King Shakra, lord of the devas. Immediately, Shakra, together with his retinue, arrived and stood before the Buddha. Then the World-Honored One spoke this sutra extensively to King Shakra and the elder Ananda. When he had finished speaking, he told King Shakra, "You should uphold, recite, and study this sutra. O Shakra! If good men and good women cultivate the path of Enlightenment for eons as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, practicing the six perfections—yet if other good men and good women listen to, recite, study, and even just hold this sutra in their hands, their merit will be even greater—how much more so if they explain it widely to others? Therefore, O Shakra, you should recite and study this sutra and teach it widely to the thirty-three devas." Then he told Ananda, "You too should uphold, recite, and study it, and explain it widely to the fourfold assembly."

At that time, the King of Gods, Shakra, said to the Buddha, "World-Honored One! What should this sutra be called, and how should we uphold it?"

The Buddha said to Shakra, "This sutra brings about immeasurable and boundless merit. All voice-hearers and solitary realizers cannot fully observe and know it. Kaushika, you should know that this sutra is a profound, subtle, and great gathering of merit. Now I will briefly explain its name to you. Listen carefully, listen carefully, and reflect on it well."

Then Shakra, Lord of the Gods, together with the Elder Ananda, said to the Buddha: "Excellent, Blessed One! We respectfully accept your teaching." The Buddha said: "Receive and uphold this sutra as 'Praising the Tathagata's True, Ultimate Meaning of Merit.' Receive and uphold it as 'The Inconceivable Great Embrace.' Receive and uphold it as 'All Vows Embraced in the Great Vow.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching the Inconceivable Embrace of the True Dharma.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching Entry into the One Vehicle.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching the Boundless Noble Truth.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching the Tathagata Store.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching the Dharma Body.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching That Emptiness Conceals the True Reality.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching the One Truth.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching the Ever-Abiding, Peaceful, Single Refuge.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching the Inverted and the True.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching That the Intrinsically Pure Mind Is Concealed.' Receive and uphold it as 'Teaching the Tathagata's True Heirs.' Receive and uphold it as 'Lady Shrimala's Lion's Roar.'"

"Furthermore, Kauśika, the teaching in this sutra cuts through all doubt. It definitively reveals the ultimate meaning and leads into the single vehicle of the Dharma. Kauśika, I now entrust this sutra, the Lion's Roar of Queen Śrīmālā, to you. Until the Dharma remains in the world, you should uphold it, read it, recite it, and explain it in full detail."

Shakra said to the Buddha, "Excellent, World-Honored One! I respectfully receive your honored teaching."

At that time, Shakra, the lord of gods, the elder Ananda, and the entire great assembly—gods, humans, asuras, gandharvas, and others—heard what the Buddha taught, rejoiced, and put it into practice.
