> Chapter 52

昔外國有沙門，於山中行道，有鬼變化作無頭人，來到沙門前。報言：「無頭痛之患——目所以視色，耳以聽聲，鼻以知香，口以受味——了無頭，何一快乎？」鬼復沒去，復化無身，但有手足。沙門言：「無身者不知痛痒，無五藏，了不知病，何一快乎？」鬼復沒去，更作無手足人，從一面車轉輪來至沙門。道人言：「大快！無有手足，不能行取他財物，何其快哉？」鬼言：「沙門守一心不動。」鬼便化作端正男子來，頭面著道人足言：「道人持意堅乃如是，今道人所學但成不久。」頭面著足恭敬而去也。

> Once, in a foreign land, there was a monk who practiced the Way in the mountains. A ghost transformed itself into a headless man and appeared before the monk. It said, "With no head, there is no pain of headache—eyes are for seeing forms, ears for hearing sounds, nose for smelling scents, mouth for tasting flavors—having no head at all, what a relief!" The ghost then vanished, and transformed again into a bodyless being, with only hands and feet. The monk said, "One without a body knows neither pain nor itch; without the five organs, one knows nothing of illness—what a relief!" The ghost vanished again, and this time made itself into a being without hands or feet, riding on a wheeled cart that rolled toward the monk. The practitioner said, "Wonderful! Without hands or feet, one cannot move about to take others' property—how excellent!" The ghost said, "This monk maintains a single, unwavering mind." The ghost then transformed into a handsome, upright man, bowed his head to the monk's feet, and said, "The monk's resolve is so firm; what you practice will soon bear fruit." Then he bowed his head to the feet in reverence and departed.
