The Seven Worthies and Seven Stages belong to the beginning level of the Tripitaka teaching. In the Shared teaching, the first and second stages are equivalent. These correspond to the Faith stage of the Distinct teaching and the Five Grades of the Perfect teaching; here, views and thoughts are only subdued, while one still remains at the level of an ordinary being. The fruition of a Srota-apanna enters the stream of the sages; this is equal to the third and fourth stages of the Shared teaching, and also connects with the first stage of the Distinct teaching and the first stage of the Perfect teaching. Only when the eighty-eight delusions are fully eliminated does one find rest.
From the second to the seventh stage of the Faith level in the Perfect and Distinct teachings, the ultimate fruition of the Tripitaka and Shared teachings are all at the same level. Together, they eliminate the Four Abidings to realize the partial truth. As for the delusions like dust and sand, they are divided into those that are suppressed and those that are eliminated, both internally and externally.
From the eighth to the tenth stage of the Faith level, the two kinds of delusions are emptied. By perfecting the provisional, the worldly truth is fully prepared, and only then is the principle penetrated. This matches the latter three stages of the Distinct teaching, and also connects to the levels of the Ten Practices and Ten Dedications, which are the same.
The stages of the Distinct teaching are entirely equal to the levels of the Perfect teaching. One divides and eliminates ignorance to realize the true cause. The stages of Equal Enlightenment and Wonderful Enlightenment correspond to the first and second stages of the Ten Practices. Beyond these, there are three further stages that have no established names.
