> 1\. Reasons for the Teaching

> When the sages establish teachings, there must be reasons behind them; they do not arise without cause. Thus it is said: When conditions are ripe, the truth reveals itself. This is indeed meaningful. However, conditions can be understood in both general and specific terms. First, the general condition: All the teachings of the Buddha are responses to causes and requests, revealing the truth to liberate beings. From the time our Tathāgata dwelled in this world for forty-nine years, beginning at Deer Park and ending at the Golden River, he delivered over three hundred discourses in between. Sometimes he spoke of nature, sometimes of characteristics; sometimes he taught existence, sometimes emptiness. Yet all his actions were always for one purpose. As the Lotus Sutra states: "All Buddhas appear in the world for one great purpose and condition—to open, show, awaken, and guide all beings to the Buddha's wisdom and insight." This is the general condition for all teachings. Second, the specific conditions: Each teaching arises from different conditions, hence they are called specific. Regarding this sutra, there are ten specific conditions: 1. To refute the wrong views of non-Buddhist paths. 2. To turn those of the Small Vehicle toward the Great Vehicle. 3. To prevent those attached to provisional teachings from misunderstanding emptiness. 4. To help them realize the Two Truths, enter the Middle Way, and develop right view. 5. To reveal the Buddha's supreme virtues and inspire pure faith. 6. To encourage the arising of the great bodhi mind. 7. To guide the practice of profound and vast bodhisattva conduct. 8. To cut off all deep and heavy obstructions. 9. To attain the unsurpassed fruit of enlightenment. 10. To transmit the teaching to later generations for the benefit of all beings. It is due to these conditions that this teaching arises.
