King Bimbisara Visits the Buddha to Make Offerings Sutra

Translated by the Western Jin Monk Shi Faju

Thus have I heard:

At one time, the Blessed One was staying in the Jeta Grove of Anathapindika's Park near the city of Shravasti, together with a great assembly of twelve hundred fifty monks. He was honored and revered by people, and all came to make offerings to him—monks, nuns, laymen, and laywomen, great kings and crown princes, ministers and officials, down to ordinary people—all came to make offerings, providing robes, food and drink, beds and bedding, and medicine for the sick. At that time, the World-Honored One's fame and virtue were heard far and wide. Thus the World-Honored One, the Tathagata, the Truly Enlightened, the Perfectly Awakened, accomplished in wisdom and conduct, the Well-Gone One, the Knower of the World, the Unsurpassed One, the Tamer of the Path, the Teacher of Gods and Humans, the Buddha, the World-Honored One, taught the Dharma to living beings—good in the beginning, good in the middle, good in the end, profound in meaning and fully endowed with the pure conduct.

At that time, King Bimbisara of Magadha addressed his ministers: "Prepare the royal chariot with the peacock-feather canopy. Why? I wish to go to the country of Kasi and Kosala to inquire after the World-Honored One, to pay homage and attend upon him. The appearance of a World-Honored One in the world is very rare; to encounter one is also very rare. A Tathagata appears in the world only from time to time, like the udumbara flower that blooms only at long intervals. The World-Honored One is likewise — extremely rare to encounter." They replied, "Yes, great king!" Then the ministers, having received the instruction of King Bimbisara of Magadha, prepared the royal chariot with the peacock-feather canopy and went to where King Bimbisara was, and said to the king: "The chariot is ready. Now is the time."

Then King Bimbisara of Magadha mounted the chariot with the peacock-feather canopy, surrounded before and behind by ministers and people, and departed from the city of Rajagaha. By the king's majesty, they gradually journeyed to Kasi and Kosala, arriving at Jetavana Anathapindika's Park in the city of Savatthi. He rode the chariot to the city gate, then descended from the chariot and walked on foot to Jetavana, to the place where the Tathagata was. Just as a warrior king sets aside the five royal insignia, he bowed his head to the World-Honored One's feet, stroked the World-Honored One's feet with his hands, and announced his own name: "I am King Bimbisara of Magadha, king among kings — I am King Bimbisara."
