Meditation Practice Contemplation Sutra
Translation by An Shigao of Parthia, Tripitaka Master of the Later Han Dynasty
This is what I heard:
At that time, the Buddha was dwelling in the Jeta Grove, Anathapindika's Park, in the city of Shravasti. The Buddha addressed the assembly: "Bhikkhus!" The bhikkhus, receiving his instruction, listened attentively to the Buddha.
The Buddha said: "Monks, if even for the snap of a finger you contemplate the thought of death, reflecting that all that has a body will die, this is practicing meditation diligently, this is following the Buddha's teaching, this is not foolishly consuming the offerings of the people. How much more so for those who practice it extensively! To put it simply, if you contemplate the perception of impurity, the perception of foul food, the perception that nothing in the world is truly joyful, the perception of impermanence, the perception that impermanence is suffering, the perception that suffering is not-self, the perception that not-self is emptiness, the perception of renunciation, the perception of abandoning lust, the perception of cessation, the perception of no-self; the perception of the body after death being eaten by worms, the perception of flowing blood, the perception of swelling, the perception of turning blue and rotting, the perception of putrid stench, the perception of hair falling out and flesh decaying, the perception of all bonds being loosened, the perception of the skeleton scattering apart, the perception of bones turning red, white, dry, black, or the color of a dove, the perception of bones crumbling to dust, the perception that the world offers no refuge, the perception that nothing in the world is stable, the perception that the world is separation, the perception that the world is dark and confused, the perception that the world is hard to endure, the perception that the world is wasteful and useless, the perception that the world is a place of calamity and distress, and the perception that all the world leads to Nirvana."
"Monks, if even for the snap of a finger you reflect on these contemplations, you are already practicing diligently, following the Buddha's teachings, and not unworthily accepting offerings from others. How much more so if you practice them extensively! Therefore, you should constantly cultivate these contemplations on the Dharma."
