The Sutra of the Fundamental Secret Mantra of Amitābha Buddha Spoken by the Buddha, translated by the Tripitaka Master Bodhiruci of the Northern Wei Dynasty, is an important Pure Land scripture transmitted during the Cao-Wei period. It expounds the fundamental mantra of Amitābha Buddha and the merits of reciting it, emphasizing the esoteric practice of rebirth in the Land of Ultimate Bliss through the union of mantra recitation and Buddha-name mindfulness. This sutra integrates Pure Land faith with mantra practice, reflecting the characteristic fusion of exoteric and esoteric teachings in early Chinese Buddhism. It is a scripture valued by both the Pure Land and esoteric traditions, providing crucial evidence for the study of the development of Pure Land esotericism and exerting profound influence within Buddhist rituals and systems of practice.

Amitabha Buddha's Fundamental Secret Mantra Sutra

Translated by Tripiṭaka Master Bodhiruci of the Wei Dynasty, by Imperial Decree

Thus I have heard:

Thus I have heard:

At one time, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika, near the city of Shravasti. With him were a great gathering of 1,250 monks, all of whom were great Arhats, widely known and respected. Among them were the elders Shariputra, Mahamaudgalyayana, Mahakashyapa, Mahakatyayana, Mahakausthila, Revata, Shuddhipanthaka, Nanda, Ananda, Rahula, Gavampati, Pindola-Bharadvaja, Kalodayin, Mahakapphina, Vakkula, and Aniruddha.

Along with these great disciples, there were also numerous Bodhisattvas and Mahasattvas, such as the Dharma Prince Manjushri, the Bodhisattva Ajita, the Bodhisattva Gandhahastin, and the Bodhisattva Nityodyukta, along with other great Bodhisattvas. In addition, countless heavenly beings, including Shakra, the king of gods, were all present together in that great assembly.

Then the Buddha said to the elder Shariputra, "Passing from here westward across one hundred thousand billion Buddha-lands, there exists a world named Ultimate Bliss. In this land, there is a Buddha called Amitabha, who is presently teaching the Dharma.

"Shariputra, why is that land called 'Ultimate Bliss'? Because the beings in that country experience no suffering whatsoever—they only receive all kinds of happiness. Therefore, it is called 'Ultimate Bliss.'"

"Moreover, Shariputra, in the Land of Ultimate Bliss there are seven tiers of railings, seven layers of nets, and seven rows of trees, all surrounded by four kinds of precious treasures. That is why this land is called ‘Ultimate Bliss.’"

“Moreover, Shariputra, in the Land of Ultimate Bliss there are pools made of the seven treasures, filled with the waters of eight excellent qualities. The bottom of these pools is covered with pure golden sand. The paths and stairways on the four sides are made of gold, silver, crystal, and glass. Above them, there are pavilions and towers adorned with gold, silver, crystal, glass, conch shell, red pearls, and agate. In the pools, lotus flowers bloom as large as chariot wheels: blue ones shining with blue light, yellow ones with yellow light, red ones with red light, and white ones with white light. They are exquisite, fragrant, and pure. Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss has accomplished such virtues and adornments.

"Moreover, Shariputra, in that Buddha's land, heavenly music constantly plays, the ground is made of gold, and at all hours of the day and night, mandara flowers rain down. The beings in that land, each morning, take their robes and fill them with exquisite flowers to make offerings to the countless Buddhas of ten thousand other lands. By mealtime, they return to their own country to eat and walk in meditation. Shariputra, the Land of Ultimate Bliss is adorned with such virtues and blessings."

"Moreover, Shariputra, in that land there are various kinds of wondrous and multicolored birds: white cranes, peacocks, parrots, _sārī_, _kalaviṅka_, and _jīvajīvaka_. These birds sing harmonious and elegant melodies at all hours of the day and night. Their songs proclaim the Five Roots, the Five Powers, the Seven Factors of Enlightenment, and the Eightfold Noble Path, along with other such teachings. When the beings in that land hear these sounds, they all call to mind the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.

Shariputra, do not think that these birds are actually beings reborn due to karmic retribution. Why is that? Because in that Buddhaland, there are no three lower realms. Shariputra, in that land, not even the name of the three lower realms exists, let alone their reality. These birds are all transformations created by Amitabha Buddha, wishing to spread the sound of the Dharma far and wide.

Shariputra, in that Buddhaland, when a gentle breeze stirs, the rows of jeweled trees and jeweled nets produce a subtle and wondrous sound, like hundreds and thousands of musical instruments playing simultaneously. All who hear these sounds naturally give rise to thoughts of mindfulness of the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha.

Shariputra, such are the virtues and majestic adornments that fill the Buddhaland of Amitabha."

"Shariputra, what do you think? Why is that Buddha called Amitabha? Shariputra, the light of that Buddha is immeasurable, shining upon the lands of the ten directions without any obstacle. Therefore, he is called Amitabha. Furthermore, Shariputra, the lifespan of that Buddha and his people is immeasurable, countless and boundless eons. Hence, he is called Amitabha. Shariputra, Amitabha Buddha attained Buddhahood ten eons ago. Moreover, Shariputra, that Buddha has immeasurable, countless disciples who are Hearers, all of whom are Arhats—beyond the reach of mere calculation. The same is true for the assembly of Bodhisattvas. Shariputra, the land of that Buddha is accomplished with such virtues and adornments.

"Moreover, Shariputra, all beings born in the Land of Ultimate Bliss have reached the stage of non-retrogression. Among them, many are in their final life before becoming Buddhas—their number is so vast it cannot be measured by calculation, but only described in terms of countless, boundless eons.

Shariputra, when beings hear of this, they should vow to be reborn in that land. Why? Because they will be able to gather together in one place with such supremely virtuous beings.

Shariputra, one cannot be reborn in that land with only a small measure of goodness, blessings, wisdom, or good karmic conditions."

"Moreover, Shariputra, Amitabha Buddha possesses a profound and secret spiritual mantra. This is called the 'Mantra for Removing All Karmic Obstacles and Attaining Rebirth in the Blissful Pure Land.'" Then he spoke this mantra:

Homage to Amitabha! The Tathagata, the Fully Enlightened One, With boundless light, illuminates all realms. Amitabha's light is vast and measureless, Shining everywhere without obstruction. Amitabha's light penetrates all darkness, Reaching everywhere, limitless and free. Amitabha's light, magnificent and pure, The light of wisdom, endless and supreme, Pervades the universe, all beings to redeem. So be it!

The Buddha said: “If a good man or good woman is able to recite this mantra, Amitabha Buddha will constantly reside above their head, protecting them day and night—never allowing their enemies to take advantage of them. In this life, they will always experience peace and security, and at the end of their life, they will naturally be reborn in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.”

"Moreover, Shariputra, the name of Amitabha Buddha is complete, endowed with immeasurable, boundless, inconceivable, deeply profound, secret, exceptionally sublime, and unsurpassed merit and virtue. Why is that? In the three characters 'Amitabha Buddha' are contained all the Buddhas of the ten directions and three times, all the Bodhisattvas, the Śrāvakas and Arhats, all the sutras, the Dhāraṇīs and spiritual mantras, and countless methods of practice. Therefore, this Buddha's name is the unsurpassed, true, ultimate Mahayana teaching; it is the unsurpassed, supremely pure, and perfect wondrous practice; it is the unsurpassed, most excellent, and subtle Dhāraṇī." And he spoke this verse:

"The syllable A encompasses all Buddhas of the ten directions and three times; The syllable Mi embodies all Bodhisattvas; The syllable Tuo includes all the eighty thousand sacred teachings— Within these three syllables, everything is complete."

"Shariputra, when beings hear of Amitabha Buddha's inconceivable virtues and feel joyful, sincerely recite his name with unwavering faith, they can experience boundless happiness in their present lives. They may transform poverty into wealth, escape karmic diseases that persecute them, or have their short lives extended. Hatred may turn to friendship, children and grandchildren may prosper, and they may find peace of body and mind with all wishes fulfilled. Such merits are beyond measure or calculation."

Shariputra, if a good man or good woman hears of Amitabha Buddha and holds fast to his name—for one day, for two days, for three, four, five, six, or seven days—focusing the mind single-mindedly without confusion, then through the power of reciting this name, all their past wrongs are wiped away. This itself is the cause of abundant roots of goodness, merit, and virtue. At the moment of their death, Amitabha Buddha and his holy assembly will appear before them. With their minds clear and undisturbed, such a person will be reborn immediately in Amitabha's Land of Ultimate Bliss. Shariputra, I have seen this benefit, and therefore I speak these words. If living beings hear this teaching, they should set their hearts on being reborn in that land.

"Shariputra, just as I now praise the inconceivable virtues of Amitabha Buddha, so too in the eastern direction are Akshobhya Buddha, Sumeru Appearance Buddha, Great Sumeru Buddha, Sumeru Light Buddha, Wonderful Voice Buddha, and countless other Buddhas as numerous as the sands of the Ganges. Each of these Buddhas, in their own realm, extends their broad and long tongue, covering the entire cosmos of a thousand million worlds, and speaks these truthful words: 'You sentient beings should have faith in this sutra that praises inconceivable virtues and is protected by all Buddhas.'"

"Shariputra, in the southern region there are Buddhas such as the Sun-Moon Lamp Buddha, the Renowned Light Buddha, the Great Flame Shoulder Buddha, the Sumeru Lamp Buddha, and the Infinite Diligence Buddha. Countless Buddhas, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges, each in their own land extend their vast and far-reaching tongues, covering the entire universe of three thousand worlds, and speak these truthful words: 'All you beings should have faith in this sutra, which praises the inconceivable merit of being protected and remembered by all Buddhas.'"

"Shariputra, in the western world there are countless Buddhas such as the Buddha of Infinite Life, the Buddha of Infinite Forms, the Buddha of Infinite Banners, the Great Light Buddha, the Great Brilliance Buddha, the Jeweled Form Buddha, the Pure Light Buddha, and others as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River. Each of these Buddhas, in their own realm, extends their broad and long tongue, covering the entire universe of a thousand million worlds, and speaks these words of truth: 'All you beings should have faith in this sutra that is praised and protected by all Buddhas, which celebrates inconceivable virtues.'"

"Shariputra, in the northern regions, there are Buddhas such as Flame-Shouldered Buddha, Most Sublime Sound Buddha, Invincible Buddha, Sun-Rising Buddha, and Net of Light Buddha. As countless as the sands of the Ganges, each of these Buddhas, from within their own lands, extends the vast and far-reaching tongue, covering the entire great cosmos, and speaks the truthful words: 'You beings should have faith in this sutra that praises the inconceivable virtues and is held in the protective thoughts of all Buddhas.'"

Shariputra, in the world below there are Buddhas such as Lion Buddha, Fame Buddha, Light Buddha, Dharma Buddha, Dharma Banner Buddha, and Dharma Holder Buddha. Countless Buddhas like these, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, each in their own land extends their broad and long tongue, covering the entire realm of three thousand great thousand worlds, and speaks these true words: "All of you beings should faithfully accept this sutra, which praises inconceivable virtues and is upheld by all Buddhas."

"Shariputra, in the world above, there are Buddhas such as the Buddha of Brahma Voice, the Buddha of Constellation King, the Buddha of Supreme Fragrance, the Buddha of Fragrant Light, the Buddha of Great Blazing Shoulders, the Buddha Adorned with Multicolored Gems, the Buddha King of the Sala Trees, the Buddha of Jewel Flower Virtue, the Buddha Who Sees the True Meaning of All Things, and the Buddha Like Mount Sumeru. Countless other Buddhas, as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River, each in their own land extends their broad and long tongue, covering the entire great trichiliocosm. They speak these words of truth: 'All beings should have faith in this sutra that praises inconceivable merits and is protected and kept in mind by all Buddhas.'"

"Shariputra, what do you think? Why is this sutra called 'The Sutra Protected and Remembered by All Buddhas'? Shariputra, if there are good men and good women who hear the names of these Buddhas and the name of this sutra, all such good men and good women will be protected and remembered by all Buddhas. They will all attain the stage of non-retrogression on the path to supreme enlightenment. Therefore, Shariputra, you should all accept and believe my words and the words spoken by all Buddhas.

Shariputra, if there are people who have made a vow, are making a vow, or will make a vow to be born in the land of Amitabha Buddha, all these people will attain the stage of non-retrogression on the path to supreme enlightenment. They will be born in that land—some have already been born, some are being born now, and some will be born in the future. Therefore, Shariputra, all good men and good women who have faith should make a vow to be born in that land.

Shariputra, just as I now praise the inconceivable virtues of all Buddhas, so do those Buddhas also praise my inconceivable virtues, saying: "Shakyamuni Buddha accomplishes what is extremely rare and difficult—in the Saha Land, a defiled and evil world of the Five Turbidities—the turbidity of the age, the turbidity of views, the turbidity of afflictions, the turbidity of sentient beings, and the turbidity of lifespan—he attains Supreme Perfect Enlightenment, and for the sake of all beings, he teaches this dharma that is hard to believe in all worlds. Shariputra, you should know that I have undertaken this difficult task in this defiled and evil world of the Five Turbidities, attained Supreme Perfect Enlightenment, and for all worlds, taught this dharma that is hard to believe. This is truly difficult.

After the Buddha had delivered this sutra, Shariputra, the assembled monks, and all the beings in the world—including gods, humans, and asuras—heard what the Buddha had said. They were filled with joy and faith, received his teaching, bowed in reverence, and departed.
