Sutra on Self-Love Spoken by the Buddha

Translated by Zhu Tanwulan, Tripitaka Master from India during the Eastern Jin Dynasty.

Thus have I heard:

Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the Garden of the Benefactor of Orphans and the Solitary, near the city of Shravasti. At that time, the king came to visit the Buddha. Seeing the monastery from a distance, he got down from his carriage, set aside his canopy, unstrapped his sword, and removed his shoes. With hands clasped, he walked forward respectfully, prostrated himself fully on the ground, and touched his head to the Buddha's feet. Then he rose, knelt upright, and said, "I wish to invite the Buddha and the monks to a humble meal on the main crossroads tomorrow. Let the common people see the Buddha's supreme dignity, witness this ceremony, and pass it down as an example for generations. May all beings be freed from ghosts, demons, and harmful spells, and may they all observe the Five Precepts, so that the calamities of the kingdom may be dispelled!"

The World-Honored One said: "Excellent, excellent! As a king, one should have wise guidance, leading the people with the Way, seeking blessings for the future. In my past life as a king, I too revered the Buddhas, monks, and ascetics, constantly practiced the four boundless states and the six perfections, and diligently pursued Buddhahood, attaining the supreme and majestic state."

The king said: "Perfect truth! Indeed, as the Buddha teaches, without planting the seed, one cannot harvest the fruit. I have received the Buddha's grace to be born human in this life, transformed from female to male, with all six senses complete and whole. This is a time of great blessing, to encounter the Buddha in the world and to have his brilliant teachings flourish in my kingdom. The good karma accumulated is immeasurable. I beg to withdraw and make preparations."

The World-Honored One said, "Excellent, excellent!"

The king then returned to his palace, leveled the roads, making the high and low even, and set up canopies and banners everywhere. From the four crossroads to the gate of the monastery, railings lined both sides of the path, with lamps arranged like stars, and incense burners placed at every step. Heavenly music and various performers sang of the Buddha's supreme spirit, praising the pure virtue of the ascetics. Flowers and precious gems scattered down like rain, and fragrant water was sprinkled on the ground, while soft cushions were spread out. The king himself prepared the offerings through the night, then went in person to welcome the Buddha, prostrating on the ground and kneeling reverently, saying: "May the World-Honored One extend great compassion, and appear here to save all sentient beings!"

The Buddha donned his robes and walked with his monks to the crossroads. The king and his ministers flanked him on both sides. When the Buddha arrived, he took his seat. The queen and the crown prince bowed their heads to the ground, then bared their arms and feet. After offering water for washing, the queen herself poured and served the food. When the Buddha had finished his meal, they bowed again and said: "Though this meal is humble, we wish that all beings—gods, humans, ghosts, dragons, flying creatures, crawling insects, and every moving thing—may, in life after life, encounter the Buddha, encounter the Dharma, and encounter the community of monks. May they cast off the filth and defilement of the world and hold fast to the true and genuine awakening of the Buddha."

The Buddha said, "Excellent! As a ruler, you are like a parent to your people, nurturing them with kindness and guiding them with great wisdom. Your wishes shall come to pass!"

The king asked, "When people across the land part ways, they all say, 'Take care of yourself.' What is the essential meaning of self-care?"
