Sutra of Mahakasyapa Attending the Buddha's Parinirvana
Translated by Zhu Tanwulan, a monk from the Western Regions during the Eastern Jin Dynasty
In the time when the Buddha was in the world, Mahākāśyapa was the eldest and most senior among the bhikkhus, possessing brilliant talent and wisdom, and his body also bore the golden-colored marks of excellence. Whenever the Buddha taught the Dharma, he would often sit facing him, and people, seeing this, sometimes called him the Buddha’s teacher. Therefore, Kāśyapa took leave of the Buddha and went to the Iṣirī Mountain. One peak was named Pūrṇabhadra, spanning several thousand li in circumference, located twenty-six thousand li from Śrāvastī. It abounded in the seven treasures, sweet fruits beyond measure, fine incense, excellent medicines, and three kinds of sandalwood: one fragrant, one that cures a hundred illnesses, and one that can be used to dye five colors. The varieties of incense and medicinal herbs were countless. There were also roaming and flying birds and beasts—lions, tigers, wolves, white elephants, kīlins, vermilion sparrows, and phoenixes. There were also pure ascetics of other schools.
At that time, there was a flat, square stone, its color like lapis lazuli, measuring one hundred twenty li in length and breadth, with wondrous trees providing cool shade, their flowers and leaves of five colors, flourishing in both winter and summer, growing in rows upon the stone. Kāśyapa, in his time, taught and guided two thousand disciples, all of pure conduct and high attainment who had become arhats. They would often sit upon this stone, chanting sūtras and practicing the path.
There was also a pure, sweet, and fragrant spring, winding for forty li around. In its waters grew udumbara flowers, dark blue flowers, red flowers, and purple flowers.
Seven disciples of Kashyapa all had dreams on the same night. One monk dreamed that the square stone he sat on split in the middle, and all the trees were uprooted. Another monk dreamed that a forty-mile spring had dried up and all the flowers withered. One monk dreamed that the seats by the Kuru River were all overturned and destroyed. One monk dreamed that the entire Jambudvipa continent was collapsing. One monk dreamed that Mount Sumeru had crumbled. One monk dreamed that the Wheel-Turning Sage King had passed away. One monk dreamed that the sun and moon fell to the earth, and the world was plunged into darkness.
In the morning, they each reported their dreams to Kashyapa. Kashyapa told them, "Earlier we saw a great light, and the earth shook violently. Now you have all had these dreams. The Buddha is about to enter Parinirvana." He then ordered his disciples to set out for Kushinagar.
The Wayfarer saw a Brahmin holding a mandarava flower. Kasyapa asked him, "Where have you come from, and where are you headed? How did you obtain this celestial flower?"
He replied, "I come from the city of Kushinagar. The Buddha entered final nirvana seven days ago. The heavenly beings all came to pay their respects, bringing celestial flowers and incense to make offerings to the Buddha's body. This flower is from there."
When Kasyapa heard these words, he threw himself to the ground, weeping and saying, "The Buddha has now entered Nirvana. The three realms have lost their light—on whom shall we rely?" He then led his disciples forward. Before they had traveled several hundred li, they saw the Four Heavenly Kings, Brahma, Indra, and other deities, all carrying seven-jeweled canopies, fine incense, and beautiful flowers, all proceeding to make offerings to the Buddha. The gods played the twelve kinds of celestial music. There were also Asura kings and great spirits filling the sky. They further saw the king of Kushinagar and the kings of neighboring countries, each accompanied by hundreds of thousands of officials. Seeing Kasyapa and his disciples arriving, the noble King Malla then ordered the people of the country to clear the way, allowing Kasyapa and his disciples to proceed.
Aniruddha came out to meet him and said, "The Buddha entered Nirvana seven days ago. The cremation fire has not yet been lit, for we were waiting for your arrival."
Ananda saw Kasyapa and immediately fell to the ground, weeping uncontrollably. An elderly monk named Bōhuò stopped him, saying, "Enough, enough! When the Buddha was alive, he often restrained us, not allowing us freedom. Now that the Buddha has entered Parinirvana, we are free. Do not weep any longer."
At that moment, a heavenly being heard Bōhuò's words and raised a hand to strike him. Kasyapa stepped forward to intervene, and the heavenly being stopped, saying to Bōhuò, "Now that the Buddha has entered Parinirvana, all beings have lost their refuge. Yet you alone, in your foolishness, rejoice instead."
Hearing these words, Bōhuò understood their meaning and immediately attained the state of Arhatship.
