The Sutra on Obtaining Five Blessings through Offering Food is a Buddhist scripture of unknown authorship and date, included in the Taishō Tripiṭaka under the Collected Texts section. Originating from the Chinese Buddhist canon, it likely took form between the Northern and Southern Dynasties and the Sui-Tang period. The sutra primarily explains that through the act of offering food to beings and monastics, one may obtain five blessings: longevity, dignity, abundance, peace, and wisdom. Its teachings embody the Mahayana Buddhist spirit of compassion and aiding the world, emphasizing the merits of giving and the law of cause and effect. It serves as an important text for understanding the culture of food offerings and the concept of the field of merit in Chinese Buddhism, exerting a profound influence on later folk customs and practices such as the Ullambana Festival and rituals for releasing life.
