The Sutra on the Rewards of Giving as Spoken by the Buddha
西天譯經三藏朝散大夫試鴻臚卿傳教大師臣法天奉 詔譯
Translated by the Tripitaka Master Dharma Deva, a court official and missionary master, under imperial decree.
如是我聞：
This is what I heard:
一時，佛在舍衛國祇樹給孤獨園。爾時，有長者名給孤獨，來詣佛所，頭面禮足，於一面坐。
Once, the Buddha was staying in the Jeta Grove, in the garden of Anathapindika in the kingdom of Shravasti. At that time, a wealthy elder named Anathapindika came to where the Buddha was, bowed his head to the Buddha’s feet, and then sat down to one side.
佛告長者：「若復有人以上妙飲食，如法布施，或自手施，或恒時施，不能獲於廣大福報。於意云何？以其彼人心求富貴及快樂故。若復有人，不為衣食臥具、富貴快樂，以妙飲食如法布施，當得大富，及得妻子男女僕從眷屬孝順侍養。於意云何？以其彼人為諸有情而行布施。」
The Buddha told the elder, "If someone offers excellent food and drink in a proper act of giving—whether given with their own hands or given consistently—they will not gain vast merit. Why is that? Because that person’s mind is seeking wealth, status, and pleasure.
But if someone offers fine food and drink in a proper act of giving without seeking clothing, food, shelter, wealth, or pleasure, they will attain great prosperity, along with a wife, children, servants, relatives, and loved ones who are filial and care for them. Why is that? Because that person gives for the sake of all beings."
佛言：「長者！過去世時有長者婆羅門，名彌羅摩，行大施會，以八萬金盤滿盛金屑，而行布施；復以八萬銀盤滿盛銀屑，而行布施；復以八萬金盤滿盛銀屑，而行布施；復以八萬銀盤滿盛金屑，而行布施；復以八萬銅盤滿盛種種細妙珍味飲食，而行布施；復以八萬乳牛，而行布施；復以八萬童女，以上妙衣服真珠瓔珞種種莊嚴，而行布施；復以八萬金床銀床象牙床木床，安置種種細妙裀褥，而行布施；復以八萬輦輿車乘，敷以白㲲及憍尸迦衣，種種嚴飾，而行布施。」
The Buddha said, "Elder, in a past age, there was a wealthy brahmin named Miramo who held a great offering ceremony. He gave away eighty thousand golden trays filled with gold dust, and eighty thousand silver trays filled with silver dust. He also gave away eighty thousand golden trays filled with silver dust, and eighty thousand silver trays filled with gold dust. Furthermore, he gave away eighty thousand copper trays filled with various fine and exquisite foods and drinks. He gave away eighty thousand milk cows. He gave away eighty thousand maidens, adorned with exquisite clothing, genuine pearl necklaces, and all kinds of ornaments. He gave away eighty thousand beds—some of gold, some of silver, some of ivory, and some of wood—each spread with fine and delicate bedding. And he gave away eighty thousand carriages and vehicles, spread with white cotton cloth and kausheya silk, all beautifully decorated."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，所得果報勝前果報。於意云何？以其此人不墮邪見故。」
The Buddha said, "Elder, the merit gained from such generosity as that of King Miloma is not as great as the merit gained by offering food to a single person who holds right view. Why is this? Because such a person does not fall into wrong views."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，所得果報勝前果報。」
The Buddha said: "Great elder, the merit from such grand giving by King Miloma is not as great as the merit from offering food to one person with Right View. And the merit from offering to one person with Right View is not as great as offering to a hundred such people—the resulting blessings far surpass the former."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，所得果報勝前果報。」
The Buddha said: "Elder, the merit from King Miloma's vast generosity is not as great as that from offering food to a single person with right view. Yet, offering to one person with right view is not as meritorious as offering to a hundred such people. And offering to a hundred people with right view is still not as meritorious as offering to a single Stream-enterer. The fruit of giving to a Stream-enterer surpasses all these previous merits."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，所得果報勝前果報。」
The Buddha said: "Elder, the merit from King Miloma's acts of giving does not compare to that from offering food to one person with right view. The merit from giving to one person with right view does not compare to that from giving to a hundred such persons. The merit from giving to a hundred persons with right view does not compare to that from giving to one Stream-enterer. The merit from giving to one Stream-enterer does not compare to that from giving to a hundred Stream-enterers. The resulting reward surpasses all previous rewards."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，所得果報勝前果報。」
The Buddha said: "Elder! The charity performed by Miluomo in this way is not as good as offering food and drink to one person of Right View. Offering to one person of Right View is not as good as offering to one hundred such persons. Offering to one hundred persons of Right View is not as good as offering to one Stream-Enterer. Offering to one Stream-Enterer is not as good as offering to one hundred Stream-Enterers. Offering to one hundred Stream-Enterers is not as good as offering to one Non-Returner. The resulting reward surpasses that of the previous acts of charity."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，所得果報勝前果報。」
The Buddha said: "Elder, if someone gives alms as Milama did, their merit is not as great as that of someone who gives food and drink to a single person of right view. The merit of giving to one person of right view is not as great as giving to a hundred such people. Giving to a hundred people of right view is not as great as giving to a single Enterer of the Stream (Sotāpanna). Giving to one Enterer of the Stream is not as great as giving to a hundred such beings. Giving to a hundred Enterers of the Stream is not as great as giving to a single Non-Returner (Anāgāmin). Giving to one Non-Returner is not as great as giving to a hundred such beings—the resulting reward surpasses that of the previous offerings."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，所得果報勝前果報。」
The Buddha said: "Great elder, the way Mi Luo Mo makes his offerings does not compare to giving a single meal to one person with right understanding. Giving to one person with right understanding does not compare to giving to a hundred such people. Giving to a hundred with right understanding does not compare to giving to one who has entered the stream (a Stream-Enterer). Giving to one Stream-Enterer does not compare to giving to a hundred Stream-Enterers. Giving to a hundred Stream-Enterers does not compare to giving to one who is a Never-Returner. Giving to one Never-Returner does not compare to giving to a hundred Never-Returners. Giving to a hundred Never-Returners does not compare to giving to one Arhat (a fully enlightened being). The rewards from these acts of giving surpass those from the previous ones."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，所得果報勝前果報。」
The Buddha said: "Milord! Offering such alms as Mira does is not as good as offering food and drink to a single person of right view. Giving to one person of right view is not as good as giving to a hundred such people. Giving to a hundred people of right view is not as good as giving to one who has entered the stream (a Stream-Enterer). Giving to one Stream-Enterer is not as good as giving to a hundred Stream-Enterers. Giving to a hundred Stream-Enterers is not as good as giving to one who will return once more (a Once-Returner). Giving to one Once-Returner is not as good as giving to a hundred Once-Returners. Giving to a hundred Once-Returners is not as good as giving to one who will not return (a Non-Returner). Giving to one Non-Returner is not as good as giving to a hundred Non-Returners. Giving to a hundred Non-Returners is not as good as giving to one Arhat (a fully enlightened one). Giving to one Arhat is not as good as giving to a hundred Arhats. The resulting merit from these offerings surpasses the previous one."
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，百緣覺不如施一如來、應、正等覺，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，百緣覺不如施如來、應、正等覺，施如來、應、正等覺不如施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，百緣覺不如施如來、應、正等覺，施如來、應、正等覺不如施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾，施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾不如施四方一切持鉢僧食，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，百緣覺不如施如來、應、正等覺，施如來、應、正等覺不如施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾，施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾不如施四方一切持鉢僧食，施四方一切持鉢僧食不如施四方一切僧園林，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，百緣覺不如施如來、應、正等覺，施如來、應、正等覺不如施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾，施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾不如施四方一切持鉢僧食，施四方一切持鉢僧食不如施四方一切僧園林，施四方一切僧園林不如施四方一切僧精舍，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，百緣覺不如施如來、應、正等覺，施如來、應、正等覺不如施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾，施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾不如施四方一切持鉢僧食，施四方一切持鉢僧食不如施四方一切僧園林，施四方一切僧園林不如施四方一切僧精舍，施四方一切僧精舍不如盡形志心歸依佛法僧，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，百緣覺不如施如來、應、正等覺，施如來、應、正等覺不如施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾，施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾不如施四方一切持鉢僧食，施四方一切持鉢僧食不如施四方一切僧園林，施四方一切僧園林不如施四方一切僧精舍，施四方一切僧精舍不如盡形志心歸依佛、法、僧，盡形志心歸依佛法僧不如盡形不殺生、不偷盜、不婬欲、不妄語、不飲酒，所得果報勝前果報。」
佛言：「長者！彼彌羅摩如是行施，不如有人以其飲食施一正見人，一正見人不如施百正見人，百正見人不如施一須陀洹，一須陀洹不如施百須陀洹，百須陀洹不如施一阿那含，一阿那含不如施百阿那含，百阿那含不如施一阿羅漢，一阿羅漢不如施百阿羅漢，百阿羅漢不如施一緣覺，一緣覺不如施百緣覺，百緣覺不如施如來、應、正等覺，施如來、應、正等覺不如施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾，施佛及隨佛大苾芻眾不如施四方一切持鉢僧食，施四方一切持鉢僧食不如施四方一切僧園林，施四方一切僧園林不如施四方一切僧精舍，施四方一切僧精舍不如盡形志心歸依佛、法、僧，盡形志心歸依佛、法、僧不如盡形不殺生、不偷盜、不婬欲、不妄語、不飲酒，盡形不殺生、不偷盜、不婬欲、不妄語、不飲酒，不如有人於十方世界，徧一切處行大慈心饒益眾生，離諸分別心無相故，所得果報勝前果報。」
爾時世尊說此語已，告長者言：「往昔彌羅摩婆羅門行大施會者，非別沙門婆羅門等，則我身是。」
時給孤獨長者聞佛說已，無我見、人見、眾生見、壽者見，遠離惑想，心得清淨，悟寂滅忍。
佛說長者施報經
