Chapter 2: The Great Majestic Virtue of the Mantras Revealed
At that time, the Tathagata Shakyamuni arose from samadhi. With the Buddha-eye, he observed all the Buddha-realms and the assemblies of all the devas gathered there. Like a lion shaking its mane and looking around, he addressed the Vajra-holder, the Lord of Secrets:
"Vajra-holder! Listen attentively now. The great mantra-king of the Single-Syllable Buddha-Crown, along with the Four Great Buddha-Crowns, the Urna-mark, and others—all those who accomplish great benefit—the Mantra-consorts, the Buddha's Hand, the Buddha's Bowl, the Buddha's Lips, the Buddha's Mouth, the Dharma-Wheel, and other great mantra-kings: all beings in the realms, all sentient beings who diligently practice the true-word conduct of the Buddha-Crown, and all those who uphold the Bodhisattva Vehicle—bhikkhus, bhikkhunis, upasakas, upasikas—will not be hindered or destroyed by any deva or worldly force. They will attain the state of non-retrogression. All will obtain peace and happiness. In all places, all sufferings and afflictions will be completely eradicated. All will give rise to the practice of great compassion, sharing the same flavor and appearance. They will not be burned by fire, not swept away by water, not wounded by blades, not harmed by poison, not bitten by snakes, and not afflicted by any calamity. All the great true-word mantra-kings spoken by the Tathagatas—when upheld by Bodhisattvas and other pure-hearted sentient beings of the Great Vehicle, the Bodhisattva Vehicle—are born from this samadhi of all Tathagatas."
Those who uphold the Great Mantra and other great vidyārājas should write this dhāraṇī with ox gall on birch bark and place it in their hair knot. If they are bhikṣus or bhikṣuṇīs, they should write this dhāraṇī and attach it to their monastic robes. If they are upāsakas or upāsikās, they should tie it to their arm or wear it around their neck.
If a king is not harassed by enemies, he can sleep and wake in peace, day and night, protected by the great and virtuous sages and heavenly beings.
Thus, and other beings who can uphold this and diligently practice the true word teachings will, in all places, attain unobstructed freedom. All who see them will feel joy. They will be far removed from all suffering and gain all peace and happiness. They will receive offerings and respect from all humans and gods. All devas, nagas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, hungry ghosts, pishachas, and all hard-to-tame obstructing vinayakas will not dare to approach them. They will be free from the fear of falling into the evil realms.
"O Vajrapāni! This mantra of the great vidyārāja and his consort—all sentient beings who diligently practice the bodhisattva path, as well as those who cultivate the Buddha-crown mantra, may use it to accomplish peaceful and auspicious deeds. All malevolent stars and oppressive influences will be pacified and extinguished. It brings benefit and welfare to all beings, and summons all devas, nāgas, and yakṣas."
"Vajrapāni, I will briefly explain, so that those who cultivate the Buddha-Crown Mantra may swiftly attain spiritual accomplishments and accomplish all endeavors."
The World-Honored One, having spoken thus, addressed Vajrapāṇi: "This great mantra king spoken by all the Tathāgatas—the great Buddha's crown, the white parasol Buddha's crown, the lofty Buddha's crown, the supreme Buddha's crown, the radiant-gathering Buddha's crown...—this great Buddha's crown mantra king enters the samādhi of all the Tathāgatas. Diligent, courageous, and powerful, it surpasses all adversaries and accomplishes the samādhi of supreme excellence."
The Single-Syllable Crown Wheel King's Buddha-Eye Brow Mark, the Great Compassionate Buddha's Tooth, together with the Invincible Tathagata's Hand, the Tathagata's Alms Bowl, the Tathagata's Robe, the Tathagata's Dharma Wheel, and the Wisdom Consorts, and so forth—all these teachings flow forth from the great compassionate, swiftly-arising, majestic lion's roar. They cannot be destroyed by any Bodhisattva, and are blessed and rejoiced in by all Buddhas.
Great Wisdom shines brightly, transforming darkness into light. With profound insight, it creates purity and auspiciousness, becoming the most supreme and honored in all worlds.
It manifests the supreme, spotless, fearless state, bestowing dignified wisdom, vast and immeasurable extraordinary intelligence, a firm, courageous, diamond-strong body, the ten powers, and great majestic virtue.
It dispels ignorance and delusion, unfolds the wisdom of all buddhas, and becomes the great treasury of all bodhisattva virtues, enabling all-encompassing wisdom, realizing the state of tranquility, manifesting unobstructed, courageous, majestic power, and supreme wisdom.
It awakens compassion in beings of unruly nature, and accomplishes the blazing samadhi of all tathagatas, the great mantra king, the single-syllable Buddha-crown wheel king.
Then the mantra is spoken:
Namo Samanta Buddha Namah. Om, Bhru Om.
When the World-Honored Buddha Shakyamuni first spoke this mantra, it was as if a great wind swept across the continent of Jambudvīpa, shaking all the forests, groves, medicinal herbs, leaves, flowers, and fruits. In the same way, when this Wheel-Turning King's single-syllable mantra was first uttered, the three thousand great thousand worlds trembled in six ways. Mount Sumeru shook mightily, the great oceans surged and boiled, and countless worlds as numerous as the sands of the Ganges River quaked. Valleys and seas swayed like blades of grass; all mountains, forests, rivers, and oceans were set in motion. Every demonic palace blazed like a raging fire—by the power of the Buddha's majestic spiritual blessing—and all were struck with terror. The demonic hosts and celestial beings grew restless and uneasy, taking refuge in the World-Honored Buddha. In all worlds, beings in the hell realms attained peace and happiness.
At that moment, the World-Honored One manifested such divine power and blessings. In order to reveal the Buddha-Crown of the Wheel-Turning King, he himself took the form of a Wheel-Turning King, adorned with the marks of merit, complete with the seven treasures, ablaze with all radiance, shining brilliantly, and seated upon the great lion-throne of the Wheel-Turning King, magnificently decorated with an interwoven array of countless Dharma adornments. His brilliance illuminated everything, and his halo, like a wheel, formed a circle of light around him. Not a single being or assembly of beings at that time could dare to look upon him without blinking. Even great bodhisattvas such as Maitreya... could not gaze upon him without blinking for even an instant.
At that moment, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and Vajrapāṇi, the Secret Lord Bodhisattva, overwhelmed by the Buddha’s majestic power, collapsed unconscious to the ground. In the span of a single instant, all the great and mighty deities—Maheśvara, Śakra, Viṣṇu, Yama, Varuṇa, Kubera, Vāyu, Garuḍa, Kiṃnara, Mahoraga, and others—had all their weapons fall from their hands. Maheśvara’s trident dropped, Śakra’s vajra fell, Viṣṇu’s discus, Kubera’s club, Varuṇa’s noose—all the weapons of these great and powerful deities fell to the earth. Their vitality, strength, and spiritual powers were all stripped away.
Empowered by the Great Wheel-Turning Mantra King, all bodhisattvas recollect enlightenment and sport in samadhi. All devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas... and others take refuge in the Buddha, the World-Honored One. They all tremble like banana leaves, their body hair standing on end, unable to bear gazing upon the form and color of the Great Wheel King's mantra.
At that moment, the World-Honored One concealed the majestic form of a Wheel-Turning King and, in an instant, proclaimed this Great Goddess of Mantras spoken by all Tathagatas. She is able to pacify all beings who are difficult to tame, able to accomplish all Buddha-Crown Wheel-Turning Kings, able to quell all conflicts, disputes, and arguments. She is the Mother of True Words for all Tathagata families, the Mother of all Bodhisattvas.
Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and Vajrapāṇi, the Lord of Secrets, proclaimed this Buddha-Eye mantra in order to awaken beings. Spoken by all Buddhas, it accomplishes all that is beneficial and swiftly brings about the attainment of the Cakravartin Buddha-Crown. The mantra is spoken thus:
Homage to all the Tathagatas. Oṃ. Rulu, sapru. Jvala. Tiṣṭha. Siddha-locani. All purposes, be accomplished. Svāhā.
After the Buddha-Eye Dharani was spoken, Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva, Vajrapāṇi the Secret Lord, and all others rose from their seats. Even all the heavenly beings… and the entire assembly regained their original spiritual powers, each took up their own weapons once more, and all took refuge in the World-Honored Buddha. With great joy in their hearts, they gazed intently upon the Tathāgata and praised him, saying: “Ah, how wondrous!”
Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and Vajrapāṇi, the Lord of Secrets, addressed Śākyamuni, the Perfectly Enlightened One, saying: "World-Honored One, what is this extraordinary sight? World-Honored One, we have never before seen the Tathāgata holding such a form—this radiant assembly of the Crown Wheel King. What is this wondrous marvel?"
The Buddha said: "Noble one! Through the Samadhi of the form and appearance of the Supreme Wheel-Turning King, all Buddhas, World-Honored Ones, perform their divine play of supernatural powers. Noble one! Just as you manifest mantra bodies and transformations within the great mandala assembly, abiding in the inconceivable and displaying great majestic virtue—so too does the Tathagata, the Wheel-Turning King, abide in the mantra form and appearance body and reveal it."
"Virtuous one! This Buddha-Crown Turning Wheel King abides in the supreme samadhi, the true mantra body of all Tathagatas. All great bodhisattvas, all mantra kings and consorts, and all celestial beings cannot oppose or transgress it."
"Virtuous one! There is this Mantra of the Turning Wheel King Buddha's Crown. In any place where a person recites and upholds it, within five hundred yojanas, all worldly and transcendental mantras will not circulate, will not achieve success. The pure mantras you speak of, the empowered mantras you invoke, will not succeed, will not manifest, will not display their majestic power. Yet, if one merely recalls this mantra, all worldly and transcendental mantras will attain their siddhis (accomplishments). Those empowered mantra-bodies you speak of, all that cannot be achieved or made manifest—by this mantra they should be accomplished.
Within the land of five hundred yojanas, devas, nagas, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, and bodhisattvas abiding in mantra-bodies will be unable to remain there, unable to roam, unable to achieve success, unable to manifest efficacy, unable to attain siddhis. Why? Because abiding in this samadhi of the Buddha's Crown Wheel King, none can overpower it, except for the samaya of the Buddha-Eye Mantra. By reciting this mantra seven times, their bodies will become tranquil. If not, its majestic power is unbearable.
One who cultivates mantras must, from beginning to end, recite this Buddha-Eye Mantra. Even Tenth Ground Bodhisattvas cannot endure the majestic power of this Wheel King, how much less other heavenly kings or lesser sentient beings?"
At that time, the World-Honored One, to reveal the majestic power of the Buddha's crown, to manifest the majestic power of the Buddha's canopy, and through the empowerment of all Buddha canopies, then abided in the sovereign of the White Canopy Buddha Crown. His body took the form of a canopy, covering this three-thousandfold world system, without obstructing a single sentient being. The shape of the white canopy entirely covered the Buddha's crown, and the top of the canopy rested precisely upon the Tathāgata's crown.
Avalokiteśvara Bodhisattva and Vajrapāṇi, the Secret Lord Bodhisattva, asked the Buddha, the World-Honored One: "World-Honored One, what is this canopy? Its color and form cover the three-thousandfold world system and abide there, dwelling upon the World-Honored One's crown. We cannot see its boundaries, cannot observe or behold it fully, cannot reach its edges?"
The Buddha said: "Noble one, this is called the White Canopy Buddha-Crown King. It has been proclaimed by countless Tathagatas. It manifests with the infinite colored jewels of all Tathagatas, the pervasive sound of their voices, and the interwoven patterns of all genuine mani jewels. A net of precious pearls appears everywhere before you, displaying inconceivable adornments as reflections. This is the canopy of all Buddha-World-Honored Ones, the canopy of all Tathagatas, the canopy that accomplishes the Buddha-Crown King. It enables all sentient beings to swiftly attain realization. This canopy of all buddhas is named the White Canopy. Even a great and mighty bodhisattva cannot fathom its limits; even measuring over a thousand kotis of kalpas, one cannot reach its boundaries nor see its edge."
At that time, the World-Honored One, Shakyamuni Buddha, contemplated the Buddha-Crown King. By means of his own spiritual power and majestic strength, he empowered it, abiding in the form of the mantra-body and spoke the mantra, saying:
Namo Samanta Buddha Namah. Om, Tathagata Srisa Anavarakta Mritah. Om, Mama Mama Mama Hum Nih.
At that moment, this great world system of three thousand realms trembled and shook. Then, the World-Honored One addressed the bodhisattvas, saying: "O Bodhisattvas! This White Canopy Buddha-Crown True Mantra can accomplish all mantras, can gather and unite. It is the great luminous king, unfailing, unobstructed, and mighty."
At that time, the World-Honored One, to manifest the majestic power of the Buddha-Crown King, to bring benefit to all beings, to pacify all calamities and afflictions, and to break through all worldly and transcendent mantras, used these mantra syllables to empower countless bodhisattvas and praise immeasurable billions of Buddhas. He proclaimed this radiant gathering of the Buddha-Crown King’s light, revealing its great majestic power—this is the adamantine phrase of the Wheel-Turning Buddha-Crown’s majestic radiance. And he spoke the mantra:
Homage to all Buddhas. Om. Tathagata, essence, Avalokiteshvara, Great being, King of compassion, Hum. Enter the vajra, enter the vajra realm. Daka daka, Nara nara, Vinara vinara, Chinna chinna, Pinna pinna, Hum hum, phat phat. Svaha.
When this true mantra was spoken, the three thousand great thousand worlds took on the form of a jeweled flame lamp, shining with immeasurable, intricately interwoven light. Together with the blue lotus-colored, indigo jewel stamens as flames, they blazed and illuminated, appearing throughout the entire expanse of space. All jeweled assemblies became jeweled canopies, adorned with interwoven bells and chimes, gathering all majestic lights. By the power of transformation, they formed gateways, boundaries, and pathways, spreading everywhere in manifold ways. The Buddha’s majestic virtue manifested, pervading and covering the realm of space, abiding through empowerment, causing all bodhisattvas to rejoice and all beings to attain peace and happiness.
From the Buddha’s crown emerged a radiance that severed and destroyed all worldly and transcendent true mantra powers, stripping away their empowerment and rendering them unaccomplished. Why? Because of the treasury of great majestic light.
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed Vajrapāṇi, the Lord of Secrets, saying: "O Lord of Secrets! This radiant, illuminating, and majestic Buddha-crown of all the Tathāgatas—by this light, it illuminates the three thousandfold great world system, reaching down to the very boundaries of the Avīci hells and up to the peak of existence. It illuminates all demonic palaces, causing them to wither and fade, and shines forth into the expanse of the sky."
Vajrapāni! This Buddha-Crown King Mantra has the power to sever all mantras. As soon as this mantra is recited, the practitioner can, at will, cause any worldly or transcendental mantra to be cut off, shattered, or destroyed—except for the Wheel-King Buddha-Crown, the White Canopy Lord Buddha-Crown, the Exalted Buddha-Crown, the Supreme Buddha-Crown, the Buddha-Eye, and the Five-Syllable Tathāgata Heart Mantra. Apart from these, all other worldly and transcendental mantras and incantations can be broken, defeated, bound, and subdued. If the practitioner merely invokes its name or recites it, even the most unruly spirits and demons can be crushed, driven away, and humiliated at will.
Vajrapani! This Radiant Assembly Buddha-Crown Mantra should not be recited in unsuitable places. It should be recited where there are sacred relics, or in locations blessed by noble sages and venerable beings. Why is this? Because the majestic power of this Radiant Assembly Buddha-Crown is equal to that of a Wheel-Turning King. If this is not observed, harm will befall the practitioner, the assembly of sages will not descend, and demonic forces will gain advantage. Know this: In pure places, places with relics, or places where sages attained realization, first consecrate the site with the Samaya empowerment, then further empower it with the Wheel-Turning King Samaya and the Buddha-Eye empowerment. If done otherwise, harm will result, and even after long practice, accomplishment will not be attained. This great mantra king, the Radiant Assembly, must not be casually recited by those practicing other mantras. Why? Because the power of those other mantra deities would be impaired. Know this: In secluded places—by a riverbank, beside a pond, along the seashore, in the mountains, within a cave, or at a stupa site established by sages—the practitioner will attain great majesty. They will possess strength, great vigor, mindfulness, and wisdom, equal to those who attain accomplishment in other sections. Their radiant power and majesty will be like that of one who has achieved the mantra of a Wheel-Turning King. O Secret Lord! This bright king can give rise to inconceivable majesty.
"O Vajrapāṇi! This is the majestic power of the Tathāgata, the radiance of the Tathāgata, the empowerment of the Tathāgata. It is the luminous majesty, luminous essence, and luminous nature of all buddhas, which gives rise to the majestic radiance within all sentient beings. O Vajrapāṇi! It can sever all mantras, subdue the hard to subdue, and shatter the power of others' mantras. This is the great majestic power, the great supernatural ability, capable of accomplishing all things."
At that time, the World-Honored One again contemplated the boundless Dharma realm. Knowing that for the benefit of sentient beings, and to enable the power of the Tathagata's samadhi to flow equally into all bodhisattvas, giving rise to their boundless courage and strength, and to bestow peace and joy through the practice of all mantras empowered by the Buddhas, he proclaimed this mantra:
At that moment, all worlds trembled and shook. All devas, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, and mahoragas were bewildered and confused, losing their supernatural powers. The unruly ones were burned, and the vinayakas let out cries of "ha ha!"
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the Secret Lord, saying: "Secret Lord! This is called the Supreme Buddha-Crown King, the samadhi power of all Tathagatas, the great courageous and vigorous strength. If any good man or good woman cultivates the Wheel-Turning King Buddha-Crown, or any other pure believer, wherever they go—in battles, debates, disputes, or arguments—if they recite it, they will achieve victory in all places. Or if any great king who has pure faith in the Buddha-Dharma writes this mantra with saffron on birch bark or plain silk, and fastens it to a banner or wears it around the neck, then when going forth, the enemy, upon seeing it, will be defeated; their army will dissolve, unable to aid one another. Why is this? Because of the empowerment of the Tathagata's divine power. Or if any layman or laywoman wears it on their head, that person will be auspicious, pure in dignity, blessed with glorious radiance and power, not subject to others' oppression, and will attain auspicious eloquence."
"O Secret Lord! I will briefly explain that the Bodhisattva who upholds this gains immeasurable strength and courage, receives the empowerment of the Tathagata, and cannot be hindered by any demon or approached by any heavenly being. Those who cultivate this great mantra are unequaled, and all their powers will be accomplished. If accomplished, it is equal to the mantra of the Wheel-Turning King. Why? Because of the power of samadhi empowered by the divine strength of all Tathagatas. This is the King of the Highest Peak."
At that time, the World-Honored One, Shakyamuni Tathagata, manifested his miraculous power and majestic virtue—to bring all sins to an end, to destroy all evil destinies, to relieve all the sufferings of the hell realms, to display inconceivable miraculous deeds, and to gather the majestic miraculous power of all Tathagatas. This supreme mantra of the Buddha's crown is proclaimed by all Buddhas.
The mantra is:
I pay homage to all the Buddhas. Om, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who is born from the lotus, the one who
The moment this mantra was spoken, this world and all Buddha-lands shook in six ways, and not a single being suffered from hunger or thirst. By the majestic power of all Buddhas, a great and awesome virtue manifested, so that in all the hells, every hunger and thirst was completely quelled, and all beings were granted food and drink. Countless as the sands of the Ganges, the Tathāgatas together proclaimed it—to bring benefit to beings in great terror, they revealed this great spiritual power.
Vajrapani! Where this Buddha-Crown King's teaching is spread, all demons find no opportunity. How much more so for those who practice it? If there are good men and good women who can constantly remember and recite this Mantra King, they will attain inconceivable spiritual powers, possess great diligence, and perfect their supernatural abilities. All heavenly beings will pay homage to them, and before long they will gain inconceivable merits.
If there are those who master the Mantra King, or those with pure faith in the Great Vehicle, or those who cultivate the Wheel-Turning Buddha-Crown, they will attain inconceivable spiritual powers and become supreme among all sentient beings. Do not doubt this—they will obtain the spiritual powers of a Buddha, fulfill all their wishes without hindrance, and achieve all spiritual powers equally, truly, and fearlessly. At all times, they will be equal to all Buddhas.
Vajrapani! If one practices this supreme Buddha-Crown mantra, they will swiftly attain the power of spiritual mastery. In an instant, all difficult-to-tame beings who see them will flee in fear. All demonic hosts and celestial beings who behold them will lose their spiritual powers and scatter in retreat.
If one achieves mastery through this mantra, it is no different from attaining the mantra of a Wheel-Turning King. Even in the hell realms, they can manifest spiritual powers to benefit the beings suffering there, relieving all sentient beings from hunger and torment.
I have spoken only a small part. The Buddha-Crown King's samadhi is immeasurable and boundless—its benefits and merits cannot be fully described even in an entire kalpa. I have merely spoken a fraction of what the World-Honored One has taught.
At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the entire assembly of bodhisattvas: "Virtuous ones! The merits of the Tathagata's Crown King and other such mantra-bodies abiding in the samadhi of all buddhas cannot be fully described even over a thousand kotis of kalpas. Out of compassion for all sentient beings, I will speak but a small portion. The inconceivable merits praised by the Buddha Crown King lineage—even if a thousand buddhas were to extol them for kotis of kalpas, they could not exhaust its limits. The majestic power of the Tathagata's own Crown King Mantra Wheel King—even if a thousand buddhas praised it for kotis of kalpas, they could not reach its end. If a virtuous man or woman were to make offerings of food, drink, clothing, medicine, and all kinds of necessities to a hundred buddhas—the merit accumulated by reciting and upholding this Wheel King is incomparable to that."
Then he spoke this verse:
If one practices with wisdom, this supreme mantra king, will certainly attain enlightenment, reaching the stage of realization without doubt, becoming unborn and undying.
Those who uphold this Buddha-crown mantra possess unparalleled majestic power, inconceivable brilliance and strength, unequaled across the three times.
Among all beings in different realms, none can compare to one who accomplishes the Buddha-crown mantra.
Even if Indra himself, or other powerful celestial beings, the mighty ones of the desire realm throughout all worlds, see a practitioner of the crown-wheel mantra and fail to rise and pay homage, their heads will split into seven pieces, like the stem of a fragrant orchid.
The lord of the heavens, Indra, Varuna, Kubera, and mighty yakshas— their radiance will be dimmed and withered, while the practitioner shines with a thousand lights, illuminating all the celestial realms.
If a great being masters the great mantra king, whether by reading it, reciting it, or upholding it—even by copying the sutra scroll, writing it on birch bark, carrying it with them, or using it to anoint an altar, applying fragrant clay to the ground, scattering flowers, burning incense, or powdered incense, and placing the sutra scroll on the altar as an offering—this essential teaching should be upheld, recited, and expounded for others. Observe the capacities of beings, whether superior or inferior, and teach accordingly. For those diligently cultivating the bodhisattva path, explain it earnestly, and they will ultimately attain the blazing samadhi of the Tathagata. Those with pure faith and unwavering commitment to the Great Vehicle should be given this teaching. The Tathagata’s words may be expounded and explained; do not be miserly with them. They will constantly gain the wisdom of past lives, not fall into evil realms, transcend a thousand eons of birth and death, realize unsurpassed perfect enlightenment, and always be protected by all devas and nagas. Their speech will be dignified and pleasing to hear, all beings will cherish and pity them, they will pass away peacefully, and no mara will disturb them.
If there is a good man or good woman, a great being, who firmly enters the Great Vehicle, and who cultivates the true words of the Tathagata's lineage out of fulfilling their vow, such a person possesses great merit and great majestic virtue, is embraced by the sages and worthies, does not take refuge in other classes, but solely takes refuge in the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, transcends all demonic paths and intentions, and whose faculties are not deficient—their body will be radiant and lustrous, of a fair and golden hue; they will be born into a noble and pure family, under auspicious constellations; they will be greatly diligent and courageous; their bodily form will be perfect, neither too fat nor too thin, nor withered; their nails will be like red copper; their ankles will be full and even; their stature will be tall and great; their skin will be pure white; their teeth will not be too crowded, nor sparse and dark; their eyes will not blink excessively, nor be yellow or green; they will be free from scabies and leprosy, free from greed and attachment, not possessed by Vinayaka; their body will be well-proportioned, with a head that is round, full, and even, and veins that are straight and balanced. I have now briefly described their characteristics—they will be born into a great family. For beings of great merit and great majestic virtue, this essential teaching is proclaimed. If such a good man or good woman obtains this Buddha's Crown True Words, they will certainly attain accomplishment. For the sake of such beings, expound it, revere it, and be careful not to withhold it—you must give it to them.
This profound Dharma teaching is extremely difficult to hear in other worlds. It is heard in many other worlds due to the empowerment of the Tathagata. If someone hears it even once, you should understand that it is all empowered by the Wheel-Turning King's Samadhi. You should know it is so.
If someone obtains this Dharma teaching of the Tathagata family and practices it, even reaching the point of holding it in their hands, it is all due to the empowerment of the Tathagata. Why? Because it is all established by the inconceivable mantra, the Samadhi of the Crown Wheel, and the mantra-body of the Tathagata.
You should understand that this is the greatest mantra phrase among all mantras, the inconceivable Dharma teaching of the Crown King's Samadhi. Therefore, those beings will certainly seek the accomplishment of the Tathagata's mantra.
Wherever this essential teaching is written down in scriptures or recited, countless beings from the human and heavenly realms will come to make offerings.
"One who attains the blazing verses of this samadhi will have no room for intense anger to arise."
The One-Syllable Crown Wheel King Sutra Spoken at the Bodhi Site, Volume 1
In the national edition of this scripture, there are three places where the text and meaning are broken.
First, in the seventh folio, lines eight and nine, after the phrase "great blessings adorn all peace..." it abruptly jumps to "the king's body is like a canopy..."
Second, in the thirteenth folio, line nineteen, after "divine powers blaze boundlessly..." it abruptly jumps to "joy is easily attained..."
Third, in the twentieth folio, line eight, after "the White Canopy Buddha-Crown..." it abruptly jumps to "even an endless kalpa could not describe..."
Now, upon checking the Dan edition, the error in the national edition is clear: it mistakenly moved a block of 149 lines—from "the White Canopy Buddha-Crown..." through "the king's body is like a canopy..." up to "divine powers blaze boundlessly..."—and placed it after "all peace..."
Conversely, it moved a block of 150 lines—from "all peace..." through "joy is easily attained..." up to "the White Canopy Buddha-Crown..."—and placed it after "divine powers blaze boundlessly..."
This misplacement caused the text to break at these three points. We have now corrected the order according to the Dan edition.
