> Chapter 17: The Dhāraṇī Section

> At that time, the World-Honored One addressed the Noble Mahāmati Bodhisattva, saying: "Mahāmati, listen attentively and receive this mantra of the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. This mantra has been spoken, is being spoken, and will be spoken by all Buddhas of the past, present, and future. Mahāmati, I too now speak it for the sake of all Dharma teachers who uphold, recite, and study the Laṅkāvatāra Sūtra. The mantra is as follows:"

> Gate Gate, Paragate, Parasamgate, Bodhi Svaha! Gone, gone, gone beyond, gone altogether beyond—Awakening, hail!

> Mahamati, this is known as the Dharani passage within the Great Sutra of Lanka. Good men and good women—whether monks, nuns, laymen, or laywomen—who uphold, recite, and explain this passage to others shall not have their faults found by anyone. Neither gods nor goddesses, neither dragons nor dragon maidens, neither yakshas nor yakshinis, neither asuras nor asura maidens, neither garudas nor garuda maidens, neither kinnaras nor kinnara maidens, neither mahoragas nor mahoraga maidens, neither bhutas nor bhuta maidens, neither kumbhandas nor kumbhanda maidens, neither pishachas nor pishacha maidens, neither utraras nor utrara maidens, neither apalas nor apala maidens, neither rakshasas nor rakshasi maidens, neither kakas nor kaka maidens, neither ujoharas nor ujohara maidens, neither ghataputras nor ghataputra maidens—neither humans nor non-humans, neither human women nor non-human women—shall find any fault in them. If there are evil spirits who harm people, and one wishes to drive them away quickly, one may recite this dharani one hundred times. Those evil spirits will then be terrified, wail, and flee in haste.

> The Buddha then addressed Mahamati once more, saying, "Mahamati, to protect these Dharma-protecting teachers, I will now speak a dharani." And he uttered the incantation:

> Bubbles on water, bubbles on water's surface— Fading, fading, fading away. All formations, all worlds, all beauties— Drifting, dissolving, scattering. Desire and clinging, birth and death, ignorance and craving— Like foam on a wave, like a dream at dawn. So it passes, so it is gone. Thus it ends, thus it is still. This is the truth. So be it.

> Mahamati, these phrases of the dharani, if a good man or good woman receives, upholds, recites, and explains them for others, no one will be able to harm them. Whether it is a heavenly being or a heavenly maiden, a dragon or a dragon maiden, a yaksha or a yaksha maiden, an asura or an asura maiden, a garuda or a garuda maiden, a kinnara or a kinnara maiden, a mahoraga or a mahoraga maiden, a gandharva or a gandharva maiden, a bhuta or a bhuta maiden, a kumbhanda or a kumbhanda maiden, a pishaca or a pishaca maiden, an udara or an udara maiden, an apamara or an apamara maiden, a rakshasa or a rakshasa maiden, an utara or an utara maiden, a kata-pūtana or a kata-pūtana maiden, whether a human or a non-human, whether a human woman or a non-human woman—none of them will be able to cause any harm. Mahamati, if someone is able to receive, uphold, and recite these phrases of the dharani, that person deserves to be called one who recites the entire Lankavatara Sutra. Therefore, I teach this dharani to ward off all rakshasas and to protect all good men and good women who uphold this scripture.
