He received the Dharma from the Venerable Vasubandhu and, while teaching, arrived at the country of Tiga, at the house of Vaisala. Seeing a white light rising over the residence, he said to his disciples, "This household harbors a sage. Without speaking a word, he is truly a vessel of the Great Vehicle. He does not walk the four paths, knowing them to be defiled." The elder came out, paid respects, and asked what was needed. The Patriarch said, "I seek an attendant." The elder replied, "I have a son named Vodhi Mitra, now fifty years old, who has never spoken nor set foot on the ground." The Patriarch said, "As you say, he is truly my disciple." Hearing this, Vodhi immediately rose, bowed, and recited a verse: "Father and mother are not my kin—who is the closest? Buddhas are not my path—what is the truest way?" The Patriarch answered with a verse: "Your words are close to the mind, surpassing parents. Your conduct accords with the path—the Buddhas' mind itself. Seeking a formed Buddha outwardly will not resemble you. To know your original mind, it is neither joined nor separate." Upon hearing this verse, Vodhi walked seven steps. The Patriarch said, "This youth once encountered a Buddha. His compassionate vow is vast, but fearing the deep attachment of parental love, he remained silent and still." The elder then allowed him to leave home, and the Patriarch soon conferred full ordination. Transmitting the Dharma, he spoke this verse: "Emptiness has no inside or outside; the mind's Dharma is likewise. If one understands emptiness, one realizes the principle of suchness."One word brings immediate return—not failing the fleshy protuberance born with him.
