The Six Recollections and Five Contemplations for Newly Ordained Monks

When the Buddha established the monastic precepts, it was like the ritual system of the Confucians. The Confucians say that without complete ritual, a person cannot be considered fully formed. In the same way, monks who do not follow the precepts are said to have no starting point for their practice. If you cultivate both of these, you can attain the Confucian way and the Buddhist way alike. The current emperor, having received the Buddha's prophecy in times past, ordains monks every year and constantly wishes to spread both the teaching of the Buddha and the teachings of the Duke of Zhou and Confucius throughout the world. How then could those with shaven heads and monk's robes fail to be careful in their virtue and diligent in pure practice? Moreover, the six recollections and five contemplations are the daily routine of a monk. Yet some, from the very moment they receive full ordination, abandon them without observance — this happens often. And some devote themselves solely to reciting the words without understanding their meaning — this happens too. Alas, if one does not understand these things and remains in the dark until one's hair turns white, I truly fear one has strayed far from the Path. Therefore, relying on the disciplinary tradition of Mount Zhongnan, I have gathered the orthodox teachings and provided annotations, so that newcomers to practice need not stumble at the very beginning.
