Chapter 6: The Practice of Invitation
Procedure for Selecting the Nun to Go Before the Monastic Community to Request the Invitation (Pavāraṇā)
(After the rainy season retreat (summer retreat) has ended, the Bhikkhunī (nun) community must go before the Bhikkhu (monk) community to request the invitation. Therefore, an emissary must be appointed from among the nuns to go to the Bhikkhu community on behalf of the Bhikkhunī community to seek the invitation. The procedure for appointing this emissary is as follows.)
Sisters in the Sangha, please listen. If the Sangha is ready and it is agreed, the Sangha now appoints a specific Bhikkhuni to go on behalf of the Bhikkhuni Sangha to the Bhikkhu Sangha and report three matters for confession: what we have seen, heard, or suspected. This is the declaration.
Attention, venerable sisters. The monastic community has now appointed a specific nun to go before the full community of monks and report on three matters of self-reflection: what she has seen, heard, or suspected.
If any venerable sister agrees with the monastic community appointing this nun to go before the monks and report on these three matters of self-reflection — what she has seen, heard, or suspected — please remain silent. If anyone disagrees, please speak now.
The monastic community has already agreed to appoint this nun for this purpose. The matter is settled. Because the community has remained silent in agreement, this decree shall be upheld.
"The Procedure for Requesting Self-Censure within the Great Sangha"
(Having chosen a companion, proceed to the Great Sangha. After paying homage to the feet of the monks, bow slightly with lowered head, bring your palms together, and speak respectfully as follows:)
The bhikkhunīs have completed their rains retreat, and the bhikkhus have likewise completed theirs. Now the bhikkhunī community proclaims their threefold purification: what has been seen, what has been heard, and what is suspected. Out of compassion, venerable ones, please speak to me. If I have committed any offense, I will confess it properly according to the Dharma. (This is recited three times.)
If the monks become exhausted from all performing the Pavāraṇā ceremony together on the same day, the Buddha said: "This should not be done. If the monks perform the Pavāraṇā on the fourteenth day, the nuns should perform it on the fifteenth day."
If the senior monks are ill, if the monastic community is not in harmony, or if the quorum is not complete, the nuns should send a messenger to pay respects and inquire after their health. If they fail to do so, it is a Dukkaṭa offense. Similarly, if the nuns' community is ill, not in harmony, or incomplete, the monks should send a messenger to pay respects and inquire after their health. If they fail to do so, it is also a Dukkaṭa offense. (The messenger who goes to the monks to receive the Pavāraṇā returns and performs the ceremony together with the nuns. The procedures for this Pavāraṇā are the same as those described above for the monks.)
