### 法雨堂題名

> Rain of Dharma Hall Inscription

紹熈辛亥歲。住山瑩講師建大法堂。廣袤宏曠殆甲諸方。是時竹院禪師曇公謁是院。因請立名。師應聲曰。院額寶雲。雲能致雨。雨能潤物。茲院乃台宗中興發源處。佛祖雨法雨沃群生非一日。當以法雨為堂之名。宜矣。宗曉深愛此名因依。而山門未暇揭是榜。恐久而堙沒。特表而出之。經不云乎。慈意妙大雲澍甘露法雨。又曰。無上法雨雨汝身田。又曰。能雨無上甘露法雨。法雨之名遍出諸大乘經。今吾祖通公大法師負高明之識。來自三韓。得淨光法道。殆於此地洪通。四明天竺二尊者蟠英蓄秀。能荷傳斯宗。迄今垂二百載。其道未艾。此非雨法雨沃群生乎。昔楊無為甞贊宗門陳尊宿曰。叢林處處蒙霑潤。莫測風雷起老龍。今於寶雲通公亦云也。寶雲振祖集

> In the year of Shaoxi Xinyou (1191), Master Ying, the abbot of the mountain, built a grand Dharma hall. It was vast and magnificent, surpassing those of other monasteries. At that time, the Zen master Tan of Zhuyuan Monastery visited this temple and was invited to name the hall. The master responded without hesitation, "This monastery is named Baoyun (Precious Cloud). Clouds can bring rain, and rain can nourish all things. This monastery is the place where the Tiantai school was revived and flourished. The Buddhas and patriarchs have rained the Dharma rain to nourish all beings for a long time. It is fitting to name this hall 'Dharma Rain'." Zongxiao deeply appreciated this name and adopted it. However, the mountain gate had not yet been fitted with this plaque, and I feared that in time it might be forgotten. Therefore, I specially bring it to light. Does not the sutra say, "With compassionate intent like a great cloud, it rains the sweet dew of Dharma"? And again, "The unsurpassed Dharma rain falls upon the field of your body and mind." And again, "It can rain the unsurpassed sweet dew of Dharma rain." The name "Dharma Rain" appears throughout the great Mahayana sutras. Now our ancestor, the great Dharma Master Tong, possessing lofty and profound wisdom, came from the Three Kingdoms of Korea. He obtained the pure light of the Dharma path and opened it up widely here. The two venerable masters of Siming and Tiantong gathered brilliant and talented disciples, who were able to uphold and transmit this tradition. To this day, nearly two hundred years have passed, and this path has not yet declined. Is this not the rain of Dharma nourishing all beings? In the past, Yang Wuwei praised the Chan master Chen Zunsu of the sect, saying, "Monasteries everywhere are moistened and blessed; unknowable are the wind and thunder rising from the old dragon." Now I say the same of Tong, the master of Baoyun. This is the "Baoyun Zhenzu Collection."
