The Sutra on the Eight Precepts of Abstention was translated during the Liu Song dynasty by the monk Juqu Jingsheng. It is one of the important early Chinese Buddhist texts on monastic discipline. This sutra primarily elucidates the specific content and practice methods of the eight precepts of abstinence, which include refraining from killing, stealing, sexual misconduct, false speech, intoxicants, sitting on high and broad beds, adorning oneself with garlands and perfumes, and eating at improper times. Its purpose is to assist lay practitioners in purifying body and mind through observing these precepts for short periods. As a translator of the Northern Liang dynasty, Juqu Jingsheng's rendition is concise in language and facilitates dissemination, exerting a profound influence on the practice of Buddhist precepts in China. This sutra is not only an essential guide for lay Buddhist cultivation but also reflects the foundational role of precepts within the threefold training of discipline, meditation, and wisdom. To this day, it remains regarded as a core scripture within the Chinese Buddhist tradition of observance and abstinence.

Buddha's Discourse on the Eight-Precept Observance

Translated by Layman Song Juqu Jingsheng

This is what I heard:

At one time, the Blessed One was staying in Shravasti, at the Jeta Grove in Anathapindika’s Park. There, the World-Honored One addressed the monks, “Now I will explain the Noble Eightfold Precept. Listen carefully, pay close attention, and hold it in your mind. I will now speak.” The monks replied, “Yes, World-Honored One.” And they received the teaching from the Buddha.

The World-Honored One said: "Listen, monastics. If a faithful disciple—whether a man or woman—wishes to observe the sacred Eight Precepts of fasting, you should instruct them to recite: 'Just as the arhats, throughout their lives, do not kill, nor instruct others to kill; they harbor no resentment, always maintain a sense of shame and compassion, and have loving-kindness toward all beings. I, [name], following the teaching of the arhats, from today onward, will no longer kill. I will harbor no resentment, always maintain a sense of shame and compassion, and have loving-kindness toward all beings.

Just as the arhats, throughout their lives, do not steal, but practice generosity; they do not instruct others to steal, and always delight in solitude. I, [name], following the teaching of the arhats, from today onward, will no longer steal. I will always practice generosity and delight in solitude.

Just as the arhats, throughout their lives, do not engage in impure conduct; they always practice celibacy, remaining pure and undefiled, finding joy in this. I, [name], following the teaching of the arhats, from today onward, will no longer engage in sexual activity. I will remain pure and undefiled.

Just as the arhats, throughout their lives, do not lie; they always practice truthfulness, which is the most noble and respected, upheld by the wise and revered by the world. I, [name], following the teaching of the arhats, from today onward, will no longer lie, nor will I teach others to lie. I will always practice truthfulness, act as a noble one respected by the world, and refrain from false speech.

Just as the arhats, throughout their lives, do not drink alcohol. I, [name], from today onward, will no longer drink alcohol, nor will I teach others to drink alcohol.

Just as the arhats, throughout their lives, do not break the precept of eating at improper times; they only eat at the designated times. I, [name], for this one day and one night, will not eat at improper times, nor will I teach others to do so. I will only eat at the designated times.

Just as the arhats, throughout their lives, do not sit on high or luxurious seats. I, [name], for this one day and one night, will not sit on high or wide seats, nor will I teach others to do so.

Just as the arhats, throughout their lives, do not engage in singing, dancing, or musical performances, nor do they adorn themselves with ornaments, perfumes, or cosmetics. For this one day and one night, I will not engage in singing, dancing, or musical performances, nor will I adorn myself with ornaments, perfumes, or cosmetics.'"

By practicing the sacred Eight Precepts in this way, the merit gained from observing these eight precepts is immeasurable. It cannot be said, "There is this much blessing, this much virtue, or this much reward." The blessings are so vast they cannot be counted.

Monks, just as when the five great rivers—the Ganges, Yamuna, Sindhu, Aciravati, and Mahi—flow together into one place, the water that flows there is immeasurable. It cannot be said, "There is this much water, this many jars of water, this many hundreds or thousands of jars of water." In the same way, the blessings of the sacred Eight Precepts are beyond measure. It cannot be said, "There is this much blessing, this much virtue, or this much reward." This great merit cannot be counted or calculated.

At that time, all the monks heard what the Buddha had said, rejoiced and faithfully put it into practice.
