Postscript to No. 615-A
In the past, when Li Bai climbed Yellow Crane Tower and saw Cui Hao's poem inscribed there, he set down his brush, knowing he could not surpass it. When the great master Zhiyi personally realized the Lotus Samadhi, even Guangzhai's commentary was refined, and others' works were surpassed. This shows that later scholars who repeatedly offer their own interpretations simply lack Li Bai's depth of learning.
Having already composed commentaries on the Shurangama Sutra, my friends all urged me to also explain the Lotus Sutra. I firmly declined for this very reason. However, while expounding this wonderful scripture at Ziyun Temple, my Dharma friend Daji urged the printing of the Sanskrit text and wished to outline the essential meaning of the entire sutra for beginners. Respectfully following the profound meanings and annotated passages, I have extracted the main outline, calling it "A Threaded Summary." This may allow a taste of the whole from a small part.
If I am criticized for merely compiling existing texts, I humbly accept the reproach.
Jiyu Ouyi respectfully records.
