Intermediate State Sutra (中陰經)

Chapter 4: The Bodhisattva Xianhu Asks

At that time, the bodhisattva Xianhu rose from his seat, bared his right shoulder, knelt on his right knee, and with palms joined, bowed respectfully and said to the Buddha: "Excellent, World-Honored One! The consciousness of beings in the three realms of desire, form, and formlessness is difficult to measure. What is the measure of the conditioned? What is the measure of the unconditioned? What is the measure of the cultivated? What is the measure of the uncultivated? What is the measure of the formed and formless? What is the measure of desire and desirelessness? What is the measure of the marked and the unmarked?"

At that time, the World-Honored One, hearing the questions posed by the Bodhisattva Bhadrapala, proclaimed these verses:

眾生在中陰, 如我身無異;
有漏苦諦本, 斷結不及色;
集諦二十八, 寂然塵垢除;

"Within the womb, bodies take on countless forms; Each one arising as the last ceases, like endless grains of sand.

Beings with consciousness divide into three kinds, their defilements varying widely; Some attain liberation through hearing sound, others by seeing a form.

Now I, the Enlightened One of wondrous awakening, descend into the intermediate state (bardo), And discern each and every one—the conditioned and the unconditioned truths.

Those who attain the path and realize its fruits, their five-aggregate consciousness is easy to liberate; These belong to a single category, free from both conditioned and unconditioned divisions.

Beings in the intermediate state are not different from my own nature; But the suffering of the five aggregates' form turns endlessly, like a wheel without beginning.

The self has no original name, nor does sound or word possess inherent meaning; Examining the thirty-two parts of the body, the desire realm has measurable conditions, Where three parts leave only two—yet those beings in the intermediate state, Beings of consciousness composed of five elements, are unstained by the three realms' suffering.

Ignorance, delusion, and craving confuse them—though their marks are hidden, they are not absent. The conditioned truth of suffering is the root; cutting off fetters does not reach form; The truth of origination has twenty-eight aspects, which, when calmed, removes all dust; The thirty-seven factors of awakening—the truth of the path is the real fruit.

O Xianhu! You should now know: the conditioned and the unconditioned, The definable and the indefinable—I shall explain them to you. The definable includes good and evil actions; the indefinable includes blind, ignorant states. Those who fall into these sink into birth-and-death—none but I can rescue them."

When the Buddha, the World-Honored One, spoke these words, 9.1 billion beings awakened the supreme aspiration for enlightenment, and 4.7 billion nayuta beings attained the state of Arhatship.
