The *Prajna Heart Sutra Commentary and Subcommentary*, composed by the Northern Song dynasty eminent monk Zhiyuan, is an authoritative commentary on the *Prajnaparamita Heart Sutra*. As a leading figure of the "Shanwai" (Off-Mountain) branch of the Tiantai school, Zhiyuan's work integrates Tiantai doctrine and contemplation with the Prajna philosophy of emptiness, providing a detailed, line-by-line exegesis of the Heart Sutra's profound meaning. It particularly focuses on elucidating core teachings such as "all five aggregates are empty" and the "non-duality of form and emptiness." This commentary not only systematically synthesizes the essential insights from Heart Sutra annotations since the Tang dynasty, but also reflects the integrative character of Song dynasty Buddhist doctrinal studies. It stands as an important document for researching the intellectual history of the Heart Sutra and the development of the Tiantai school, holding a pivotal academic position within Chinese Buddhist literature that bridges earlier and later traditions.

Postscript to the Commentary on the *Heart Sutra* (No. 530-A)

This work, a commentary and sub-commentary on the *Heart Sutra*, was authored by the solitary Song Master Yuán. His book delves deep into the essence, illuminating the meaning of the sutra and its commentary, making their profound truths even clearer. Truly, it is of great benefit to beings.

However, while the original commentary has long been in circulation, this profound sub-commentary has not been widely disseminated—a deep regret for scholars.

Recently, the Venerable Kōng Héshàng has undertaken to proofread it, adding punctuation and guiding marks. The woodblock carvers then humbly requested to carve it onto printing blocks, and asked me to write a postscript. Though I am not a man of letters, I rejoice in the completion of this good work, so I have composed this brief note.

享保己亥年五月天台沙門智空謹書

Written respectfully by Zhi Kong, a monk of Tiantai, in the fifth month of the Kyōhō era (1719).
