A Brief Outline of the Main Themes of the Avatamsaka Sutra, also known as the Summary of the Avatamsaka Sutra, was composed by the Tang Dynasty lay scholar Li Tongxuan. Li Tongxuan, commonly revered as Elder Li, was a key scholar of the Huayan school, renowned for his distinctive interpretations in his commentaries. This work aims to concisely elucidate the core ideas of the Avatamsaka Sutra, summarizing its profound teachings on the dependent arising of the Dharma Realm and the unimpeded interpenetration of all phenomena. The author integrates traditional Chinese learning, such as the study of the Book of Changes, into his interpretation, forming a unique system of Huayan thought. This text has had a profound influence on the later development of Huayan studies and stands as an important document for researching the Huayan school and Tang Dynasty Buddhist philosophy, holding a prominent place in the history of Buddhist philosophy.
