> Chapter 26: The Dharma Body Is Not Form

> The pure Dharmakaya is not defined by any physical appearance.

> Subhuti, what do you think?<note>Oh</note> The Tathagata should not be seen through the thirty-two physical marks.

> One cannot see the Tathāgata through physical marks. Subhūti has already said this is not so. Why then does the text say, "Thus, thus," and also state that these marks are uniquely possessed by the Tathāgata? Those who wish to see the Tathāgata should only align with the pure, fundamental mind. If one perceives the Tathāgata through the thirty-two marks, they have not yet shed the view of clinging to appearances. Hence it is said that a Wheel-Turning Sage King also possesses the thirty-two marks; would he then be the Tathāgata? Could that be the case? A Wheel-Turning Sage King is one of the Four Heavenly Kings, who oversee the good and evil in the world. In the first, fifth, and ninth months, he illuminates Jambudvīpa in the south; in the second, sixth, and tenth months, he illuminates Godānīya in the west; in the third, seventh, and eleventh months, he illuminates Uttarakuru in the north; in the fourth, eighth, and twelfth months, he illuminates Pūrvavideha in the east. He always turns like a wheel, hence his name, Wheel-Turning Sage King. The text says: Calling to your reflection by the pond brings no benefit; admiring a flower in a mirror is nothing remarkable. If one clings to form, how can they realize true reality? When thoughts are forgotten and the mind ceases to grasp, whom does one still rely on? Master Chuan said: Wrong. The verse says: Clay sculptures, wood carvings, and colorful paintings—piled with green paint and smeared with gold trim. If these are taken as the Tathāgata's form, it would make Guanyin laugh out loud. It also says: In the body with form is the formless body; beneath the golden incense burner is an iron Kunlun. Everything before you is your own family treasure—why seek the World-Honored One on Vulture Peak? Like a king wielding his sword.

> At that time, the World-Honored One spoke these verses: Those who practice heretical paths Cannot see the Tathagata.

> I speak of the Buddha-nature—it is the true nature of Buddhahood, formless and without appearance. It cannot be seen through shapes or colors, nor sought through sounds or voices. Because the World-Honored One saw that Subhuti was half believing and half doubting, He spoke a verse at that time, saying: The Tathagata is only in your own mind; the Dharma-body is pure, like empty space, without defilement or obstruction, and untouched by any worldly condition. You cannot see It with your eyes, nor can you say It has form or color; you cannot hear It with your ears, nor can you say It has sound or voice. If you try to see Me through these two means, you will not perceive the true Buddha-nature of eternal awakening, for you fail to look inward and reflect, and to cultivate according to this nature. Such people abandon the right path and cannot see the Tathagata anywhere, because they do not seek back to their own original mind. Master Chuan says: Even if you neither seek through forms nor sounds, you still have not seen the Tathagata. So tell me, how can one see? I do not know, I do not know. Seeing forms and hearing sounds is the world's constant—one layer of snow on top of another frost. If you wish to see the face of the Tathagata, you must enter the belly of Maya. Ah! This matter will be understood thirty years later.
