The "Brief Explanation of the Sutra on the Eight Realizations of the Great Beings," a commentary by the late Ming dynasty eminent monk Zhixu, is one of the important exegetical works in Chinese Buddhism. This sutra was translated by An Shigao of the Later Han dynasty and expounds upon the eight core realizations in bodhisattva practice. Based on the Tiantai teachings and contemplation, Zhixu systematically interprets the sutra's concepts such as impermanence and non-self, having few desires and knowing contentment, and compassionately liberating sentient beings, guiding practitioners toward the bodhi path of transcending birth and death. This commentary, with its profound yet accessible principles, is revered as an essential text for the study and practice of both the Pure Land and Tiantai schools, holding a lofty position within the Buddhist doctrinal system.
