"Xuefeng Zhi" (Chronicles of Xuefeng), compiled by the Ming dynasty scholar Xu Fen, is an important Buddhist monastic gazetteer documenting the history of Mount Xuefeng in Fuzhou and its namesake Chan monastery. Compiled during the late Ming period, this work systematically gathers a wealth of historical materials, including the natural geography of Mount Xuefeng, the evolution of the monastery, biographies of eminent monks, as well as poems, inscriptions, and stele records. As a significant site in Chan Buddhism, Mount Xuefeng served as the foundational monastery of the lineage established by Chan Master Yicun, known as the Xuefeng Yicun lineage, which profoundly influenced the establishment of both the Yunmen and Fayan schools. This gazetteer not only provides invaluable documentation for the study of Buddhist history and local culture in Fujian but also highlights the prominent role of Mount Xuefeng in the development of Chinese Chan Buddhism, making it a key text for understanding the spread of Chan Buddhism during the Tang and Song dynasties and the history of its monasteries.
