> Chapter 16: The Parable of Flowers in the Sky, Neither Arising Nor Ceasing

> When wind-heat strikes the eye, A film grows over it, clouding sight. Then specks like flowers scatter in the air, Falling wildly, drifting left and right. One day the film clears, the flowers fade away— One thinks they stopped because the film gave way. But still suspicion lingers, moment to moment, Fearful the film returns, and flowers reappear. Fearful the film returns, and flowers drift near. Yet the film never made an pact with flowers, Nor do flowers arise because the film is there. The two do not depend on each other— How much less, then, when one exists and one is named as void? Void itself holds no flowers, no coming or going; Nirvana and samsara lie level, undisturbed. The eye is always there, untouched by flowers or film; Perfect, round awareness shines beyond all loss or gain. In delusion, birth and death arise like phantom flowers; In awakening, stillness comes—yet flowers never truly cease. Perfect awareness leaves both flowers and film behind, Casting off both birth-and-death and ignorance. Emptiness is not mere nothing, not a thing that exists— From beginningless time, it naturally is. How much more so for the Tathāgata, who follows awakening, Where awareness itself is the essence of emptiness, more vivid still.

> Good man, it is like smelting gold ore. The gold does not exist because of the smelting process, but once it has become gold, it will never return to being ore. Through endless time, the nature of gold remains indestructible. It should not be said that it was originally incomplete. The perfect enlightenment of the Tathagata is likewise.
