Good children, if you wish to receive the wonderful precepts, you must first request a preceptor. Next, I will devoutly invite five holy teachers to bestow upon you the precept teachings. Each of you must be wholehearted and earnest in making your request three times. As for the method of requesting the preceptor, it is appropriate for you to state it yourselves; but since you are not yet able, I will now teach you. Fold your palms, speak your name, and follow my words:
"I, [your name], with one mind respectfully invite the Thus Come One Shakyamuni, the fully enlightened One, to be my preceptor. Because of [relying on] the preceptor, I will be able to receive the Bodhisattva precepts. Out of compassion..."
(Recite three times)
I humbly and wholeheartedly invite the Bodhisattva Manjusri to be my Karma Acharya. Relying on the Karma Acharya, I shall receive the Bodhisattva precepts, out of kindness and compassion.
With single-minded devotion, I respectfully invite the Bodhisattva Maitreya to be my Preceptor and Teacher. It is through relying on such a Preceptor and Teacher that I am able to receive the Bodhisattva precepts, out of compassion and mercy.
With a single-minded heart, I reverently invite all Buddhas of the ten directions to be my honored witnesses. Because I rely on these honored witnesses, I am able to receive the Bodhisattva precepts, out of compassion and kindness.
All disciples, masters, teachers, the honored witnesses of the ten directions, and all fellow practitioners—may you all be filled with unconditional compassion, rescuing beings from suffering and bringing them joy.
For you, disciples, why must we make a solemn vow? It is because we are concerned that after receiving the precepts, you may not uphold them firmly, breaking them and thus incurring offenses, falling into the lower realms. So let us recite together in one voice:
