### 維摩疏明圓等覺斷習

> Commentary on Vimalakirti: Clarifying Perfect Enlightenment and Cutting Off Habits

> Contemplating the Middle Way correctly, one transcends the two extremes of conventional and ultimate truth. Reaching the pinnacle of wisdom at the adamantine summit, the essence of the Middle Way is revealed, and the three kinds of delusions are completely eliminated, with no remaining habitual tendencies. In the Perfect Teaching, this begins from the first stage of abiding and extends through the stage of Dharma Cloud. Although one completely cuts through all views at these stages, subtle habitual tendencies still remain. At the stage of Equal Enlightenment, one enters the profound mystery, cultivating myriad practices over countless eons. Seeing truth with clarity, habitual tendencies become as faint as thin smoke—hence the phrase "no remaining habitual tendencies." Just as a small amount of salt cast into a great river loses its salty flavor, so too do these tendencies dissolve. Thus, the Great Treatise says: "The two views of existence and non-existence are extinguished without remainder; the true nature of all phenomena is what the Buddha taught." Ordinary practitioners only speak of cutting off the two views within the triple realm. Some also use the Distinct Teaching's interpretation, saying that upon reaching the first ground, one transcends the ordinary person's attachment to self and cuts off views of existence and non-existence. How could such interpretations fully illuminate this scripture's meaning? Question: What fault is there in these interpretations? Answer: In the Shared and Extended Teachings, the path of seeing cuts off all views. In the Distinct Teaching, reaching the first ground cuts off views beyond the triple realm. Neither can adequately praise the virtue of the crown prince of Buddhahood. The Sutra of the Upāsaka Precepts states: "The ninth ground cuts off habitual tendencies of views; the tenth ground cuts off habitual tendencies of craving." The Grounds Treatise says: "Transcending all views, one attains pure meditation." This refers to the stage of Equal Enlightenment. Therefore, we use this perspective to illuminate the passage. The Perfect Teaching's complete severance is thus made even clearer.
