### 取楊枝

> Taking the willow branch

律中名曰齒木。楊有四種。皆可梳齒也。一白楊。葉圓。二青揚。葉長。三赤楊。霜降葉赤。四黃楊。本性堅緻難長。今咸以柳條當楊枝。柳條垂下。乃小楊也。若無柳處。將何梳齒。須知一切木。皆可梳齒。皆名齒木。但取性和有苦味者嚼之。不獨謂柳木一種。

> <note>In the monastic code, it is called a "toothstick." There are four types of willow that can be used for cleaning teeth. First, the white willow, with round leaves. Second, the green willow, with long leaves. Third, the red willow, whose leaves turn red after frost. Fourth, the yellow willow, which is naturally hard and slow-growing. Nowadays, people use willow twigs as toothsticks. Willow twigs droop down, and are a type of small willow. If there are no willows available, what should be used to clean teeth? One should know that any wood can be used for cleaning teeth and can be called a toothstick. Simply choose wood with a mild nature and a bitter taste to chew on. It is not limited to willow alone.</note>

手執楊枝 當願眾生 皆得妙法 究竟清淨

> Holding the willow branch, I vow that all beings May attain the wondrous Dharma And reach ultimate purity.
