The Northern Peak Doctrine, composed by the Song dynasty eminent monk Zongyin, stands as a significant treatise of the Tiantai school during the Song period. Completed during the revival of Buddhist doctrinal studies in the Southern Song, this work systematically elucidates the teachings and contemplative practices of the Tiantai tradition, emphasizing the dual cultivation of calm abiding and insight, as well as the philosophical concept of "three thousand realms in a single thought." It also sought to reconcile the contemporary debates between Chan (Zen) and doctrinal schools. As a representative work of the Shanjia branch of Tiantai, it not only consolidated the Tiantai theoretical framework but also influenced the development of later Buddhist thought, holding a pivotal scholarly position in Buddhist literature that bridges past and future.
