### 修行道地經忍辱品第十三

> Chapter 13: The Perfection of Patience

設使有人撾罵行者，爾時修道當作是觀：「所可詈詈但有音聲，諦惟計之皆為空無，適起即滅。譬如文字其名各異，一一計字無有罵聲；譬如一盲目無所見，正使百盲亦無所覩。罵亦如此，一字不成，正百千字亦悉空無。」設使父母、家室、親里，共稱譽我亦復皆空。當作是觀：「譬如夷狄異音之人，雖來罵我，譬如風響，是聲皆空。」

> Suppose someone strikes or insults a practitioner. At that time, one should contemplate thus: “The insults are merely sounds. When examined carefully, they are all empty and without substance—arising and ceasing in an instant. It is like written characters, each with its own name, yet none of the characters themselves contain any insult. It is like a blind person who sees nothing—even a hundred blind people would see nothing. So too with insults: not a single word holds substance, and even a hundred thousand words are entirely empty.” Even if parents, family, or relatives praise me, it is likewise empty. One should contemplate thus: “It is like a person from a foreign land speaking an unfamiliar tongue—even if they come to insult me, it is like the sound of wind, all empty.”
