> The Sutra on the Path of Cultivation, Volume Four

> Translated by Dharmarakṣa of the Western Jin Dynasty

> Chapter 20: Encouragement and Joy

> By wisdom, beings are saved, The path is pure, a flowing stream. This wisdom drinks forever deep, Feeding on the nectar of the Dharma. Its waters never run dry, Like a spring that never fails. I turn toward the seed of wisdom, Where virtue and the Way are full. Those who are weak and weary, Through learning, find their own way. They cultivate concentration, Set their will on Dharma meditation. The Buddha, honored among gods, Acts with skillful means and grace, Revealing boundless wisdom— With body and mind, I bow in reverence.

> Even if a practitioner feels their resolve weakening, they can encourage themselves by thinking: "I have gained a great blessing—I have escaped the eight difficulties and attained the freedom of quiet dwelling. I have already met a teacher of all-encompassing wisdom and taken refuge. The Dharma is free from craving, and the Sangha is complete. I have taken up the holy life and sown the seeds of the path. Some have already reached its goal, while others are progressing toward it. Others may fall into wrong views, but I follow the right path; others may act contrary, but I walk the path of equality. Soon I will become a true heir of the Dharma. The fragrance of virtue is rare in the heavens and among humans. I will not hide my merits, and thus I will be free from distress and anxiety. I will dwell in peace, savoring the taste of liberation. Day by day, I will be filled with nourishment, saved, and at ease. I will cross the dangerous road without fear, riding the chariot of serene insight, traveling the eightfold path, reaching the city of nirvana, free from terror and hardship." With such thoughts, they urge themselves on, diligently upholding their practice. Then they recite this verse:

> If one's practice is frail and weak, Yet often encounters the Dharma's benefit, I return to the World-Honored One, To the true Dharma and the community of monks. With skillful means and a joyful heart, To encourage the frail and weak mind, Constantly focused on following and upholding, This is what is called practice. Beginners and those who have attained the Way, People are mixed like a dense forest, By departing from wrong paths, They stand firmly on the right path. Virtue of precepts is like fragrance, As if a forest of trees is perfumed, Suddenly there is liberation, Attaining the Way, it becomes fully manifest. And from the Buddha arises the Dharma-tree, Through gathering the essentials like picking flowers, If there is even a moment of slackness in the true Dharma, This is said to urge oneself to strive.
