> Attendant Pujue Recorded

> Ascending the hall, the master led the congregation in celebrating the sacred blessings — the exchanges in question and answer are not recorded. Then he said: The great Way is right before your eyes, yet right before your eyes it's hard to see. If you want to know the true body of the great Way, it never departs from sounds, forms, and words. Tapping the meditation seat with his whisk, he said: This is sound. Raising the whisk, he said: This is form. What do you call the great Way? Constantly using sun and moon as the eye of heaven, pointing out Mount Sumeru as the mountain of longevity. He then cited the examples of San Sheng who said, "When encountering people, one goes forth; having gone forth, one does not act for others." And Xing Hua who said, "When encountering people, one does not go forth; having gone forth, one acts for others." The master said: Tell me, does Kaiyuan act for others or not act for others? The great matter is not something you can manage. The small matters are each one's own responsibility.

> The master took the pulpit and said: "When the strings move, a different tune arises. When leaves fall, autumn is known. Heshan beats the drum; Xuefeng rolls the ball. Muzhou carries a board; Touzi holds oil. Zhaozhou speaks of the dog; Guishan points to the buffalo. Qingyuan lets down his foot; Juzhi raises his finger. A bunch of run-down households—each flaunts their own style. But if they came before Kaiyuan's gate, they’d be beaten with a stick until it breaks, and still not stop. Why? Haven’t you heard it said: 'Under a heavy reward, there will surely be a brave one'?"

> The summer retreat has ended, and today the abbot addresses the assembly: The cloth bag's opening begins today— Before my eyes, the autumn colors fill the rivers and hills. Suddenly, the straw sandal's heel breaks— And I realize it was all my own after all.

> Ascending the hall, the master said: "Walk with faith, and the dust of the world falls away. Pick up with faith, and your hands work with true intimacy. Speak with faith, and your words shake heaven and earth. Awaken with faith, and you stand alone beyond the crowd." Even if you can do all this, it would still be fitting for you to come to this mountain monk for a beating. Why? Because true gold is tested in the fire.

> On the winter solstice, the master ascended the hall and said: "When yin reaches its extreme, yang is born; each day the sunlight grows by a thread." He then picked up his staff and continued: "Only this monk's staff here does not belong to the shifting of yin and yang." He struck the ground once with the staff.

> The master ascended the hall and cited this: A monk asked Xianglin, "What is the matter under the monk's robe?" Xianglin answered, "In the twelfth month, fire burns the mountain." If someone today asked Kaiyuan, "What is the matter under the monk's robe?" I would just reply: "Once the snow melts away, spring naturally arrives."

> Yuan Zheng ascended the hall and said: "Yesterday, the past year departed. This morning, the present year arrives. Did the past year truly depart? Does the present year truly arrive? Tell me—how do you speak a single phrase that transcends coming and going? Already from the tower, the horn of the new year sounds; before the hall, the lamp of the old year still burns."

> On the occasion of Guanyin's birthday, the master ascended the hall and said: "Manifesting various forms and expounding various teachings—yet both forms and teachings are ultimately empty; they are merely the provisional name 'Bodhisattva.' If you further seek perfect penetration through any of these forms, you will only blind the true eye that is inherent in every person."

> On the eighth day of the fourth month, the master ascended the hall and said, "Hah! This dry piece of dung—how troublemaking from birth! Laughable, old Yunmen—one blow couldn't kill it. Kaiyuan, though you may be drawing the bow after the thief has passed, you should still throw foul water right over the head."

> The master ascended the hall and said: "Today the path for monks is open wide. My staff rises with clouds, stirring deep inspiration. To fathom the depths of rivers and lakes, the road ahead holds yet another mystic peak."

> Master Xie Lingyan addressed the assembly: "Half a month has passed since the furnace was lit, yet no fire has ever appeared. Cold ashes and bean-sized embers—yet they startle the rivers and lakes. How is this proven? The bronze Avalokitesvara bows and pays respects. The Bodhisattva Zhiji, with palms pressed together, raises a fist in reverence."

> For the Memorial Day of Lady Yan of the State of Yan, the Master ascended the hall and said: "In the days of Yan, she planted fields of blessings, Her body like water-moon, reflecting across the three thousand realms. Since she has no birth or death, where does she return? In early spring, plum blossoms bloom in the morning mist."
