> Record of Baoning Chan Temple in Jiankang Prefecture

> Attendant Guangzu Recorded

> "Abbot, are you sacred or ordinary? Step over here and stand. If you hesitate, it's a thunderbolt on a clear day."

> Take up the Dharma seal. Destroy the false and reveal the true. With a single seal, everything is fixed. All people under heaven—listen closely, listen closely.

> The document states: A unicorn's horn marks its steps. A nine-tailed phoenix soars through the sky. Before it even lifts off, one can grasp its meaning. Tenfold brilliance shines fully forth.

> Preface for the Mountain Gate. When speaking with someone of the household, one speaks of household matters. A single word spoken without self-interest causes dragons to soar and phoenixes to dance.

> Throughout the mountain monasteries and beyond, teachings abound on every side. They cite the ancients to illuminate the present, yet send people up a tree—such is not a kind heart.

> He ascended the seat. After the prayer of blessing for the emperor,<note>Questions and answers are not recorded.</note> he then spoke: "If one encounters people but does not come forth—the phoenix is not a thing of the mortal world. When it does come forth for others, it will not rest unless on the wutong tree. Therefore, the Dharma follows the practice of Dharma, and the banner of Dharma is established wherever it goes. Thus, all phenomena of the universe join in mutual celebration, rejoicing in peace and prosperity. At this very moment, tell me—what principle is this? 'Accustomed to passing before the Five Phoenix Tower, holding a golden whip to congratulate the peace.'" He then cited: A monk once asked Master Yantou, "In the midst of the dusty world, how does one discern the true master?" Yantou replied, "The copper sandalwood gong is filled to the brim with oil." The master commented: "If one can awaken right here, one may indeed rejoice in a lifetime of fulfillment. However, if not yet, let me offer a verse: The copper sandalwood gong is filled with oil. The homeland's mountains and rivers appear before one's eyes. Try looking out from the Phoenix Terrace— The Long River flows eastward without cease, day and night."

> The master said: “As I grow old, there is not a day I do not long for rest, deep in seclusion at the first mountain of West Lake. Yet, unavoidably, the wise patron of the Retreat has sent his official invitation across the miles, reaching even my quiet hermitage. So I must carry my straw hat reversed, wear my robe turned inside out, and set up shop in the bustling market of Jinling—buying and selling, offering and receiving whatever comes. He struck his staff and said: “If you can discern it right here, then before the supreme lord of the ninefold court, when speaking of the ultimate truth, it is just this. Throughout eighteen places of mountain dwelling, raising the mallet, standing the whisk, speaking of existence or nonexistence—it is only this. Now, I cast it into your arms. A sharp one who grasps it in a single lift will find it inexhaustible for a lifetime. If not—well, gold has its own price; in the end, one does not mix it with sand and sell it cheap.”

> To add to this, here is a verse by the ancient Chan Master Baoning Yong: \*After forging it red-hot, one hammer blow—\* \*Around, countless sparks fly.\* \*A perfectly good diamond drill—\* \*Laid out at the door, who would buy it?\* Today, this old monk does not begrudge his eyebrows and will add a footnote for you all: \*After forging it red-hot, one hammer blow\*— This takes no small effort. \*Around, countless sparks fly\*— Beware of illusion in your eyes. \*A perfectly good diamond drill\*— Mistaking a bell for a jar. \*Laid out at the door, who would buy it?\*— Not worth a single coin.

> To the assembly: When the sky is overcast, the nature-ground grows dim; when the sun rises, the mind’s light shines bright. The staff chuckles "he-he," and even the meditation bench leaps about. What care I for leap months or years? Let the months be long or short. Confused through how many springs and autumns, yet its function is extraordinarily steep. Great assembly, tell me—what is the staff laughing at? Pitiable are the fifty-three wise teachers, who never even dreamed of the aperture atop the head.

> Master Chijue Ascends the Hall The great Dharma King of Spirit Mountain— In these final ages, rare indeed to meet. His fame spreads across all the world; Through heaven and earth, he walks alone. His straw sandals hung by the dragon throne— Three imperial summons, he paid them no mind. He uprooted the source of the Cao tradition, Training students to probe living phrases. A master of such a school— Who would not grow to yearn for him? From the heavenly court, another imperial decree arrives— And atop凌霄 Peak, he pours out sweet dew.

> Marshal Meng Shaobao Invited the Master to Give a Teaching. His might subdued the barbarians, sweeping away demonic forces. All beings turned to him in reverence, his loyalty as steadfast as iron. He broke through Cai, vanquished Jin, defended Huang, and suppressed rebels. He avenged the hundred-year humiliation that two emperors could not, completing what the four great generals of the Restoration had not. Heaven and earth turned, seas surged, and all grass, trees, and insects bathed in his grace. At such a moment, what is to be said? The carved bow rests, the beacon fires are quenched; all nations sing in praise, celebrating peace.

> The master addressed the assembly: "The sages of the three teachings all return to one principle. When the principle prevails, practice follows; when it is lacking, practice ceases. Emptiness has no mind, yet walls have ears. Without relying on words, directly point to the essence." Then, striking his staff, he said: "The moment the lips part, it is already not so."

> The master took the pulpit. He recounted how a monk once asked an ancient virtuous elder, “What is the meaning of the patriarch’s coming from the West?” The ancient elder replied, “The wheat in front of the mountain is turning yellow.” The master said, “The wheat before the mountain is ripe, already like clouds. Facing it directly, in the moment, he points it out. Suddenly a passing spring rain falls, and the green hills are washed fresh as a new painting.”
