> Attendant's Record

> The master entered the hall and said, "After the garden where fragrances gather, we open the great forge, raise the great banner of Dharma, turn the great wheel of Dharma, and strike the great drum of Dharma. We refine the hard and melt the ordinary, cooking Buddhas and forging patriarchs. Even so, since Bodhidharma transmitted the skin and marrow, before Lingdong Mountain, it is a different spring."

> The master entered the hall and said: “One day, Guishan asked Yangshan, ‘The deep winter cold comes every year—how does the transformation of time proceed?’ Yangshan stepped forward, folded his hands, and stood still. Guishan said, ‘I knew you couldn’t answer this.’ He then asked Xiangyan, ‘What about you?’ Xiangyan said, ‘I alone can answer this.’ Guishan said, ‘The deep winter cold comes every year—how does the transformation of time proceed?’ Xiangyan stepped forward, folded his hands, and stood still. Guishan said, ‘Fortunately, Sizi didn’t understand.’ An ancient worthy said, ‘You must not understand. Mud clumps and dirt balls—strung together on one string. Originally, there is no front or back.’” The master picked this up and said: “Great assembly, do you know where the father and son of Guishan and Yangshan met? Great Compassion does not pick it out—his entire body is eyes.”

> In the snow, \[the master\] ascended the hall. He cited Zen Master Lingyin Song: A monk asked, "What is Mahaprajna?" Song replied, "Snow falls vast and boundless." The monk was silent. Song asked, "Do you understand?" The monk said, "No." Song then spontaneously recited a verse: "Mahaprajna is neither to grasp nor to let go. If one does not understand, wind blows cold and snow falls." As for Huguo \[our tradition\], it is different again: In the evening by the river, a scene worth painting—a fisherman returns, draped in a straw cloak.

> Yuan Zheng addressed the assembly, citing a monk's question to Jing Qing: "At the start of the new year, is there still the Dharma?" Jing Qing replied, "There is." The monk asked, "What is the Dharma at the start of the new year?" Jing Qing said, "The new year begins with blessings, and all things are renewed." The master then remarked: "The new year begins with blessings, and all things are renewed. But the monk's staff remains dark and worn—it does not belong to yin or yang; it is a spring unlike any other."

> The master, on the eleventh day of the fifth month in the seventh year of the Chunyou era, was summoned by imperial decree through the Grand Commandant of the Military Commission, Zhang Yunxian, to enter the palace and pay respects. After attending to the emperor, he was first brought to the Guanyin altar at the Qixi Hall, where a prayer ceremony was held for rain. Following this, the emperor requested a verse on prayer for rain. He was then led to the Xuande Hall to appear before the emperor. Ascending his seat, he offered incense and said: “Emptiness cannot contain it, the great earth cannot bear it. Placed upon the burner, I humbly offer this to extend the life of the current emperor, may His Majesty live ten thousand, ten thousand, ten thousand years. May the emperor’s lifespan equal that of Shakra, Lord of the Gods, and his merit match that of the Great Brahma King. May the Golden Wheel rule over the three thousand worlds, and may the imperial calendar extend through countless springs. For the royal family and the court, I vow that their longevity be like the Southern Peak and the Northern Peak, forever adding green; their fortune like the East Sea and the West Lake, daily increasing waves.” Then he gave the main discourse: “To unify the ten thousand through the One, to dwell on high and listen to the low—this is to reveal the great function and embody the great totality. Like the sun’s illumination, like the Dipper’s hanging, like thunder’s roar, like wind’s blowing—nothing in the vast sand-realm worlds escapes its reach. Now, for this verse on the monk ministers who protect the nation and share in the joy of peace—what can be said? Lifting high the patriarchs’ seal, I return to the imperial grace; continuing the true lamp, I assist the sage’s brightness.” He further cited an exchange: “A monk asked Qianfeng, ‘The Bhagavats of the ten directions all enter Nirvana by a single path—where is the starting point of this path?’ Qianfeng picked up his staff, drew a line, and said, ‘Right here.’ The monk then took this statement to ask Chan Master Yan, ‘The Bhagavats of the ten directions all enter Nirvana by a single path—where is the starting point of this path?’ Yan replied, ‘My fan has leapt up to the thirty-third heaven, bumping into Shakra’s nose. The carp of the East Sea, struck once, brings rain like a basin overturned.’” The master commented: “Qianfeng sits right here, not moving an inch. Yan, however, never touches the ground, lacking any concentration. Today, the Dharma is entrusted to me, this monk-minister. If I hold it back, true gold loses its luster; if I let it go, broken tiles shine with light. Tell me, what about the phrase that neither holds back nor lets go? One rain spreads over all worlds, moistening all; ten thousand voices sing in praise, bringing joyful spirits. You have sat long before the sage’s presence—please take care.”

> The master left the palace at the hour of the Monkey (around 3-5 PM) on the eleventh day and returned to the monastery. He entered the spirit cave in the back mountain to silently pray. On the morning of the fourteenth day, Chen Shuda, a palace attendant, arrived with an imperial decree to ask when it would rain enough for passage, waiting for a reply. The master immediately answered: "Still and unmoving, yet responding and connecting." As soon as the reply was given, rain fell at once. On the sixteenth day, Vice Minister Wu of the Privy Council kindly sent a verse: "The heart at Black Mountain is clear and vivid. The sounds of the golden hall are constant. Without the fisherman's guidance, how would one ever see the waves?" The master then replied with a verse of his own: "Out of the cave I raised my head and horns, back to the mountain I flicked my tail. Blessed by the power of words, I am now burdened with the waves."

> The master took the high seat and spoke. He recounted how Guishan and Yangshan were picking tea leaves. Guishan said, "All day long I hear your voice but do not see your form." Yangshan shook the tea tree. Guishan said, "You have only grasped its function, not its essence." Yangshan said, "I am just like this. What about you, Master?" Guishan sat upright. Yangshan said, "Master, you have only grasped its essence, not its function." Guishan said, "I'll spare you thirty blows." The master then composed a verse: When needle and dust meet, Essence and function are both complete. But beneath the monk's staff, It is a hundred thousand miles away.

> At the holy festival, the master ascended the hall and said: In a forest of lions, lions gather round. In a forest of sandalwood, sandalwood perfumes the air. The ancients spoke this way, but their insight was one-sided. Lingdong is not like that. So how is it, in the end? Just tell them: The sky is high, and all things are in their rightful place— The sea is wide, and all rivers flow toward it.

> Second Patriarch Elder Jian Dian Ascends the Hall. Overturning the great earth's foundation, only then does it hide. Building a family, it is still the son who destroys it. Killing Buddhas, killing Patriarchs, extinguishing our tradition—this is the blind donkey's subtle function. The wall spider eats its mother; the kind crow feeds its parent in return. One releases, one gathers; both return, yet paths differ. This old monk sets up a shop wherever he goes, a shop for drilling turtles and striking tiles. Thirty years from now, I guarantee someone will come to divine and measure.

> At the conclusion of the holy festival, the master ascended the hall and recounted an anecdote: Emperor Taizong once visited the pagoda courtyard of Kaibao Temple. Seeing a monk, he asked, "Who are you?" The monk replied, "The keeper of this pagoda." The emperor said, "This is my pagoda—how can you claim to be its keeper?" The monk had no response. Later, Xuedou spoke on his behalf: "The whole nation knows well." I, this mountain monk, now offer a verse to present to all present: Fame needs no engraving on unyielding stone— The mouths of travelers on the road are the true inscription. Under the great Song, the rightful mandate of heaven's son, Commands all nations to lower their banners in submission.

> The temple was holding a ceremony for the birthday of the bodhisattva Samantabhadra. Ascending the hall, Samantabhadra's vow and practice extend across the three thousand realms, Just as the clear and bright season begins the early summer days. To see the true state of a great being — The bright moonlight forever shines before the imperial tower.

> At the bathing of the Buddha, the master ascended the hall and said: When the crown prince Siddhartha was first born, he walked seven steps, looked in all four directions, pointed one hand to heaven and one to earth, and declared, "Above and below the heavens, I alone am the Honored One." When I, this mountain monk, heard this, I was deeply dissatisfied. Later, I heard Master Yunmen say, "Had I been there at the time, I would have struck him dead with one blow and fed him to the dogs, for the sake of peace under heaven." Hearing this, I, this mountain monk, felt great delight. Furthermore, when Mara pressed him into Nirvana, this too seemed to fit public opinion. It is pitiable that the four noble ones and six ordinary beings were all deceived and misled by Gautama. Only I, this mountain monk, do not follow his turning. But tell me: what special ability does this mountain monk possess? Dragons and snakes are easy to distinguish, but a patch-robed monk is hard to fool.

> Opening the furnace, ascending the hall. A heap of rotten firewood, a single blaze— Keep your eyes sharp, don’t be fooled. Striking the staff: The star is on the scale, not in the tray.
