> Chapter 1: The Assembly and Its Occasion

> This is what I heard: At one time, the Buddha was staying at the Jetavana Grove in the kingdom of Shravasti, together with a great assembly of one thousand two hundred and fifty monks.

> Thus: this. I: the compilation. Sutra: the text itself. This means: a teaching such as this, I personally heard from the Buddha, not something imagined or invented. At one time: the time when this Prajna was taught. Buddha: the Awakened One. Awakened himself, awakens others, and his awakening is complete—therefore he is called Buddha. Shravasti: the kingdom of King Prasenajit. Jeta was the crown prince. The tree was given by Jeta, hence "Jeta's Tree." Anathapindika's Garden: the king's minister, named Sudatta, often stayed in this garden, relieving the poor, hence "Anathapindika's Garden." The Sanskrit "Bhikshu" means "mendicant." Above, he begs the Dharma from the Buddha to illuminate his own true nature. Below, he begs food from people, planting blessings for the world. For the Buddha was about to teach the wondrous truth of true emptiness and formlessness, which only those deeply attained in the Way could comprehend—how could ordinary bhikshus take part in it? The twelve hundred and fifty people are like Confucius's three thousand disciples. "Together" means dwelling in the same place.

> At that time, the World-Honored One, at mealtime, put on his robe, took up his bowl, and entered the great city of Shravasti to beg for food. After begging from house to house in the city, he returned to his original place. When he had finished eating, he put away his robe and bowl, washed his feet, arranged his seat, and sat down.

> At that time means at a certain moment. "World-Honored One" means one who is respected by people throughout the world. The meal time is exactly noon. Washing the feet refers to the fact that when the Buddha walked, he went barefoot. "Spread out" means to arrange.
