朝鮮之有佛教也尚矣。羅麗之際。保國安民之方。概出乎此。其浸漸人心之深可知也。恭惟今上。宵旰圖治。每軫念斯土。屢賜德音。然則佛教亦豈容忽諸哉。當是時李君能和淵覃幽眇。刻苦為志。輯述朝鮮佛教通史兩編。携來索序。予受而讀之。上編則逐年紀實。以明原委。下編則按事立題。以資博聞。其卷帙浩瀚。節目詳備。朝鮮佛教之消長興廢。歷歷如指諸掌。噫。是可謂善襲阿難之芳躅者歟。予已勞君之勤注。又喜此書之出於此際。因樂成而序焉

> Buddhism has a long history in Korea. During the Silla and Goryeo periods, the methods of protecting the nation and comforting the people largely derived from it. This shows how deeply it influenced the minds of the people. I respectfully observe that our current sovereign, working tirelessly day and night to govern, has always shown concern for this land and frequently issued benevolent decrees. Under such circumstances, how could Buddhism be neglected? At this time, Mr. Lee Neung-hwa, deeply versed in profound and subtle matters, devoted himself with great diligence to compiling a comprehensive history of Korean Buddhism in two volumes, which he brought to me for a preface. Upon reading it, I found that the first volume records events year by year, clarifying the origins and developments, while the second volume organizes topics by subject matter, enriching readers' knowledge. The work is vast in scope and meticulously detailed, presenting the rise and fall, flourishing and decline of Korean Buddhism as clearly as if pointing to one's palm. Indeed, one could say this truly follows the noble path of Ananda. I am impressed by Mr. Lee's diligent efforts and also delighted that this book appears at such a timely moment. Therefore, I am happy to write this preface.
