> King Jinheung (Kim Sammaekjong) reigned for thirty-six years.

> In the second month of spring, the temple Heungnyunsa was completed in Silla. In the third month, the king permitted people to become monks and nuns. Devoted to serving the Buddha, he widely established Buddhist temples.

> The Liang Dynasty dispatched an envoy (named Shen Hu) to deliver Buddha's relics to Silla. The Silla king ordered his officials to respectfully welcome the envoy on the road in front of Heungnyunsa Temple. Earlier, the Silla monk Gakdeok had gone to Liang to seek the Dharma. At this time, he returned together with the Liang envoy.

> \*\*Supplementary Note:\*\* The monk Juede was a man of Silla, of brilliant intelligence and vast learning. His depth was such that neither ordinary men nor sages could fathom him. Since Silla had embraced and was practicing Buddhism, people vied with each other to turn to the faith. The Master, with his penetrating wisdom, knew the world could be transformed. He said, "To ascend to the lofty heights, one must first leave the valley. To study the Way, one must diligently seek a teacher. To remain complacently settled, to proceed with sluggish steps—this is not the fundamental intent of a disciple of Śākyamuni in repaying kindness." He then boarded a merchant ship to Liang, becoming a vanguard in the quest for the Dharma. However, it is not known in which exact year this occurred. This marked the beginning of Silla monks traveling abroad for study. Thereafter, he served and learned from illustrious masters in succession, fully receiving their oral instructions. It was like removing a film from the eyes, like clearing away earwax. He was consistent from beginning to end, never negligent or idle. His virtue was lofty, his conduct stern, and his reputation in the Way grew ever more eminent. Just as one who seeks treasures does not merely use them for oneself, he intended to return to his homeland to broadly succor the multitude in poverty. Thus, in the tenth year of King Jinheung, he returned to the old capital with the envoy from Liang, bringing Buddhist relics. The king immediately ordered the officials to dispatch all the百官 (officials) with full ceremonial protocol to welcome him on the road before Heungnyunsa Temple. This also marked the beginning of the arrival of relics. In the past, when the monk Kang Huì went to Wu, he sought an extension of seven days before finally encountering a divine marvel. Master Juede, however, came at a time when the ruler already had faith, accompanying a weighty envoy from the superior state to make his appearance in his own country, encountering absolutely no hardship or obstruction. Furthermore, with the Dharma-water, he broadly moistened the lands beyond the sea, causing even the indolent to stand up straight, all harboring the desire to go forth. How can one fully recount the merit and benefit of this? Later, in the twenty-sixth year, Chen dispatched the envoy Liu Si along with the monk Mingguan, who had come for study, sending Buddhist sutras and treatises totaling no less than 2,700 volumes. Initially, when the Dharma-transformation in Silla was just beginning to unfold, scriptures and images were largely lacking. By this time, they were gradually becoming substantially complete. The final ends of these two Masters are not clearly known.

> The monk Huiliang from Goguryeo came to Silla. The king appointed Huiliang as the head of the monastic order. For the first time, the Hundred-Seat Lecture Assembly was established, along with the practice of the Eight Precepts.

> \*\*\[Reference\]\*\* Silla dispatched General Jukchibu and others to attack and capture ten counties of Goguryeo. Jukchibu was a fifth-generation descendant of King Naemul. From a young age, he had great ambitions. Initially, he became a monk, wishing to observe the strength and weakness of Goguryeo. He entered their territory and heard that Dharma Master Hyeryang was holding a lecture hall to expound the scriptures, so he went to listen. One day, Hyeryang asked, "Where do you come from?" Jukchibu replied, "I am from Silla." Hyeryang grasped his hand and whispered, "I have observed many people. Seeing your appearance, you are certainly no ordinary person. Could it be you have a purpose?" Jukchibu said, "I was born in a remote land and have not yet heard the true principles. Hearing of your virtuous reputation, I came to learn from you. I hope you will not refuse me." Hyeryang said, "Although this old monk is not clever, I can still recognize your worth. This country, though small, cannot be said to lack capable people. I fear you may be captured. You should return quickly." As Jukchibu was about to leave, Hyeryang said, "You have the jaw of a swallow and the gaze of a hawk; you will surely become a general. In the future, do not bring harm upon me." Jukchibu said, "If it truly turns out as you say, I swear by the bright sun that I will not fail to maintain good relations with you." He then returned and served Silla, rising to the rank of \*Bajinchan\*. Later, the king ordered Jukchibu and eight other generals, including \*Daegakchan\* Gujin, along with Baekje troops, to invade Goguryeo. Baekje first attacked and captured Pyongyang. Jukchibu and others, riding the momentum of victory, captured ten counties from beyond Jukryeong to within Gohyeon. Thereupon, Hyeryang led his disciples to meet him by the roadside. Jukchibu said, "Long ago, I received your kindness and was able to preserve my life. How can I repay you today?" Hyeryang said, "My country's governance is in chaos; its destruction is imminent." Jukchibu took him back and presented him to the king. <note>Gyeyu Year</note> Fourteenth Year <note>Goguryeo King Yangwon's 9th year, Baekje King Seong's 31st year, Liang Dynasty Chengsheng 2nd year</note> <note>Buddhist Era 1580</note>
