Sutra on the Merits of Upholding the Names of the Seven Buddhas

如是我聞：
Thus have I heard:
一時佛薄伽梵，在室羅筏住誓多林給孤獨園，與無量無數聲聞、菩薩摩訶薩俱，及諸天人、阿素洛等，一切大眾前後圍遶。
Thus have I heard: At one time, the Blessed One, the Bhagavan, was dwelling in the Jeta Grove near Śrāvastī, in the garden of Anāthapiṇḍada, together with an immeasurable, countless assembly of śrāvakas, bodhisattva-mahāsattvas, and also devas, humans, asuras, and others—a great multitude gathered around, encircling him from front to back.
爾時，世尊告舍利子：「吾今愍念一切有情，略說受持七佛名號所生功德，令受持者當獲殊勝利益安樂。汝應諦聽，極善思惟！吾當為汝分別解說。」
At that time, the Blessed One said to Shariputra, "Now, out of compassion for all living beings, I will briefly explain the merits of reciting and upholding the names of the Seven Buddhas. Those who do so shall attain extraordinary benefits and peace. Listen with full attention and reflect deeply. I will explain it to you in detail."
舍利子言：「唯然世尊，願樂欲聞。」
Shariputra said, "Indeed, World-Honored One. We are eager and wish to hear."
佛告舍利子：「於此東方，有一佛土，名曰離垢眾德莊嚴，彼土有佛，名日輪遍照吉祥如來、應、正等覺、明行圓滿、善逝、世間解、無上丈夫、調御士、天人師、佛薄伽梵，今現在彼，哀愍世間為諸大眾說微妙法，開示初善、中善、後善，文義巧妙，純一圓滿，清白梵行。若有得聞彼佛名者，便超百千俱胝大劫生死長夜流轉劇苦，隨在所生常識宿命；有能受持彼佛名者，不失如前所獲功德，復於百千俱胝大劫，隨所生處心離愚癡，於天人中受諸妙樂；有能建立彼佛形像，供養恭敬尊重讚歎，不失如前所獲功德，復於無量俱胝大劫，隨在所生常得值佛，速證無上正等菩提。
The Buddha told Shariputra: "In the eastern direction, there is a Buddha-land called Pure and Free from Defilement, Adorned with Multitudes of Virtues. In that land, there is a Buddha named Sun Wheel Universal Illumination Auspicious Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened One, Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone One, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Trainer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. He is presently there, compassionately teaching the subtle Dharma to the great assembly, revealing the good beginning, good middle, and good end, with elegant wording and meaning, pure and complete, the stainless pure practice.
If anyone hears the name of that Buddha, they will transcend the intense suffering of wandering through the long night of birth and death for a hundred thousand kotis of great kalpas, and wherever they are reborn, they will always remember their past lives. Those who can uphold the name of that Buddha will not lose the merits previously attained, and for a hundred thousand kotis of great kalpas, wherever they are born, their minds will be free from ignorance, and they will enjoy wonderful pleasures among gods and humans. Those who can establish an image of that Buddha, make offerings, pay respect, honor, and praise it, will not lose the merits previously attained, and for immeasurable kotis of great kalpas, wherever they are born, they will always meet Buddhas and quickly realize supreme perfect Enlightenment."
「復次，舍利子！於此東方，復有佛土，名曰妙覺眾德莊嚴，彼土有佛，名妙功德住吉祥如來、應、正等覺、明行圓滿、善逝、世間解、無上丈夫、調御士、天人師、佛薄伽梵，今現在彼，哀愍世間為諸天人說微妙法，開示初善、中善、後善，文義巧妙，純一圓滿，清白梵行。若有得聞彼佛名者，便得超越一切八難，隨在所生常識宿命；有能受持彼佛名者，不失如前所獲功德，復於無量俱胝大劫，隨在所生心常聰慧，恆居善趣，受諸妙樂；有能建立彼佛形像，恭敬供養尊重讚歎，不失如前所獲功德，復於無量俱胝大劫，隨在所生常得值佛，修行一切波羅蜜多，成大導師度無量眾。
"Furthermore, Shariputra, to the east from here, there is another Buddha-land called Wonderful Enlightenment, Adorned with Multitudes of Virtues. In that land there is a Buddha named Wonderful Merit and Virtue Abiding in Auspiciousness Tathagata, Worthy One, Fully Awakened, Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Blessed One. He is presently there, out of compassion for the world, teaching the wondrous Dharma to gods and humans, revealing the good beginning, good middle, and good end — elegant in word and meaning, pure, complete, and perfectly integrated with the pure holy life.
If anyone hears the name of that Buddha, they will transcend all eight adverse conditions, and wherever they are reborn, they will always remember their past lives. If anyone upholds the name of that Buddha, they will not lose the merits previously gained, and for immeasurable millions of eons, wherever they are reborn, their minds will always be wise and bright, they will always dwell in fortunate realms, and enjoy all manner of wonderful pleasures. If anyone fashions an image of that Buddha, reverently makes offerings, respects, and praises it, they will not lose the merits previously gained, and for immeasurable millions of eons, wherever they are reborn, they will always meet Buddhas, practice all the paramitas, and become a great guiding teacher who liberates countless beings."
「復次，舍利子！於此東方，復有佛土名眾生主，彼土有佛，名一寶蓋王如來、應、正等覺、明行圓滿、善逝、世間解、無上丈夫、調御士、天人師、佛薄伽梵，今現在彼，哀愍世間為諸大眾說微妙法，開示初善、中善、後善，文義巧妙，純一圓滿，清白梵行。若有得聞彼佛名者，便得遠離一切憂苦，祿位財寶無有退失，唯除宿世定惡業因；有能受持彼佛名者，不失如前所獲功德，隨在所生具大威德，神通自在，身帶光明，形貌端嚴眾所樂見；有能建立彼佛形像，供養恭敬尊重讚歎，不失如前所獲功德，復於無量俱胝大劫，常不枉生無佛世界，修菩薩行，大誓莊嚴，成無上覺饒益一切。
"Furthermore, Shariputra, to the east there is a Buddha-land called Lord of Beings. In that land there is a Buddha named One Jeweled Canopy King Tathagata, Arhat, Fully Awakened, Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan. He is present there now, out of compassion for the world, teaching the sublime Dharma to the great assembly, revealing the good beginning, good middle, and good end — elegant in wording and meaning, pure and complete, perfectly pure in conduct.
If anyone hears that Buddha's name, they will be freed from all sorrow and suffering, and their status, wealth, and treasures will never decline — except for the effects of firmly fixed karma from past lives.
Those who can uphold that Buddha's name will not lose the merits they have gained as described, and wherever they are reborn they will possess great dignity and virtue, supernatural powers, and a body radiant with light, handsome in appearance and pleasing to all who see them.
Those who can establish images of that Buddha and make offerings, pay respect, revere, and praise them will not lose the merits they have gained as described. Moreover, for countless millions of great eons, they will never be born into a world without a Buddha. They will cultivate the Bodhisattva path, adorned by great vows, and attain supreme enlightenment for the benefit of all."
「復次，舍利子！於此東方，復有佛土名自在力，彼土有佛，名善逝定迹如來、應、正等覺、明行圓滿、善逝、世間解、無上丈夫、調御士、天人師、佛薄伽梵，今現在彼，哀愍世間為諸大眾說微妙法，開示初善、中善、後善，文義巧妙，純一圓滿，清白梵行。若有得聞彼佛名者，心便寂靜離諸諠雜；有能受持彼佛名者，不失如前所獲功德，復於無量俱胝大劫，隨所生處身四威儀，若語若默心常在定；有能建立彼佛形像，供養恭敬尊重讚歎，不失如前所獲功德，復於無量俱胝大劫，隨在所生常得值佛，速能究竟諸等持門，成兩足尊度無量眾。
"Furthermore, Shariputra, in this eastern direction there is another Buddha land called Sovereign Power. In that land there is a Buddha named Sukhagata Samādhi-trail Tathagata, Arhat, Perfectly Enlightened, Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed, Trainer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Blessed One. He now dwells there, out of compassion for the world, teaching the subtle and wondrous Dharma to the great assembly, revealing the beginning, middle, and end as good, with elegant wording and meaning, pure and complete, the stainless holy life. If anyone hears that Buddha's name, their mind becomes still and free from all clamor and distraction. If anyone can uphold that Buddha's name, they will not lose the merits previously acquired, and for countless millions of aeons, wherever they are born, in all four bodily postures—whether speaking or silent—their mind will remain in concentration. If anyone can establish that Buddha's image, making offerings, respecting, honoring, and praising it, they will not lose the merits previously acquired, and for countless millions of aeons, wherever they are born, they will always meet Buddhas, quickly perfect all concentration practices, and become the Two-Footed Honored One, liberating countless beings."
「復次，舍利子！於此東方，復有佛土名最勝寶，彼土有佛，名寶華光吉祥如來、應、正等覺、明行圓滿、善逝、世間解、無上丈夫、調御士、天人師、佛薄伽梵，今現在彼，哀愍世間為諸大眾說微妙法，開示初善、中善、後善，文義巧妙，純一圓滿，清白梵行。若有得聞彼佛名者，便得具足勝念慧行，處四眾中說法無畏，言詞威肅聞皆敬受；有能受持彼佛名者，不失如前所獲功德，復於無量俱胝大劫，隨在所生具念慧行，成猛利智得勝聞持；有能建立彼佛形像，供養恭敬尊重讚歎，不失如前所獲功德，復於無量俱胝大劫，隨所生處常值如來，辯才無礙廣宣妙法，漸次修習福慧資糧，成天人尊度無量眾。
"Furthermore, Shariputra, in the eastern direction there is a Buddha-land called Supreme Jewel. In that land there is a Buddha named Jewel Flower Light Auspicious Thus-Come One, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened One, Perfect in Knowledge and Conduct, Well-Gone One, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan. He is presently there, out of compassion for the world, teaching the subtle Dharma to the great assembly, revealing the good beginning, the good middle, and the good end — elegant in wording and meaning, pure, complete, and perfectly integrated with the pure and holy life. If anyone hears the name of that Buddha, they will immediately attain complete mindfulness and wisdom in their practice, and when speaking among the four assemblies they will be fearless, their words dignified and solemn, and all who hear will respectfully accept them. If anyone can uphold the name of that Buddha, they will not lose the merits already gained, and for countless millions of great eons, wherever they are reborn, they will be complete in mindfulness and wisdom, develop sharp and penetrating understanding, and attain superior retention of what they hear. If anyone can establish an image of that Buddha and make offerings, pay reverence, honor, and praise, they will not lose the merits already gained, and for countless millions of great eons, wherever they are reborn they will always meet the Thus-Come One, speak the wonderful Dharma with unobstructed eloquence, gradually cultivate the provisions of merit and wisdom, and become a honored one among gods and humans, liberating countless beings."
「復次，舍利子！於此南方，有一佛土名寂靜珠，彼土有佛，名超無邊迹如來、應、正等覺、明行圓滿、善逝、世間解、無上丈夫、調御士、天人師、佛薄伽梵，今現在彼，哀愍世間為諸大眾說微妙法，開示初善、中善、後善，文義巧妙，純一圓滿，清白梵行。若有得聞彼佛名者，其心泰然無所擾亂；有能受持彼佛名者，不失如前所獲功德，復能速證月光勝定，證此定已，尋復能證殑伽沙等三摩地門；有能建立彼佛形像，供養恭敬尊重讚歎，不失如前所獲功德，復於諸佛所說法門，能遍受持深達義趣，照了無礙如日光明，隨在所生常得值佛，因以速證無上菩提。
"Furthermore, Shariputra! To the south, there is a Buddha-land called Serene Pearl. In that land, there is a Buddha named Transcending Boundless Traces Tathagata, Worthy One, Fully Awakened, Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Trainer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, Bhagavan. He is presently there, out of compassion for the world, teaching the profound Dharma to the great assembly, revealing the good beginning, good middle, and good end, with elegant wording and meaning, pure and complete, in flawless pure conduct. If anyone hears the name of that Buddha, their mind becomes peaceful and free from disturbance. If anyone can uphold the name of that Buddha, they will not lose the merits previously attained, and will also quickly realize the Supreme Concentration of Moonlight. Having realized this concentration, they will then quickly realize as many concentrations as there are grains of sand in the Ganges. If anyone can create an image of that Buddha and make offerings, pay respect, honor, and praise, they will not lose the merits previously attained, and will also be able to fully uphold all Dharma teachings spoken by the Buddhas, deeply understand their meaning, and illuminate them without obstruction like the light of the sun. Wherever they are reborn, they will always meet the Buddhas, and thereby quickly realize Supreme Enlightenment.
「復次，舍利子！於此南方，復有佛土名最上香，彼土有佛，名妙香王如來、應、正等覺、明行圓滿、善逝、世間解、無上丈夫、調御士、天人師、佛薄伽梵，今現在彼，哀愍世間為諸大眾說微妙法，開示初善、中善、後善，文義巧妙，純一圓滿，清白梵行。若有得聞彼佛名者，身心調暢離諸麁重，惡業消滅煩惱輕微；有能受持彼佛名者，不失如前所獲功德，復於來世隨在所生，具三十二大丈夫相，一切有情同所瞻仰；有能建立彼佛形像，供養恭敬尊重讚歎，不失如前所獲功德，復於來世隨在所生，常得出家具清淨戒，遊諸佛土聞法受持，具足修行一切功德，由是速證阿耨多羅三藐三菩提。」
"Furthermore, Shariputra! In the southern direction, there is a Buddha-land called Supreme Fragrance. In that land, there is a Buddha named King of Wondrous Fragrance Tathagata, Worthy One, Perfectly Enlightened, Perfect in Wisdom and Conduct, Well-Gone, Knower of the World, Unsurpassed One, Tamer of Beings, Teacher of Gods and Humans, Buddha, World-Honored One. He is presently there, out of compassion for the world, teaching the subtle Dharma to the great assembly, revealing the good beginning, good middle, and good end — elegant in wording and meaning, pure and complete, spotless and pure in holy conduct. If anyone hears the name of that Buddha, their body and mind become harmonious and at ease, free from all heaviness; evil karma is eliminated, and afflictions become light. If anyone can uphold the name of that Buddha, they will not lose the merits previously attained, and in future lives, wherever they are born, they will possess the thirty-two marks of a great being, admired by all sentient beings alike. If anyone can establish an image of that Buddha, making offerings, reverently honoring and praising it, they will not lose the merits previously attained, and in future lives, wherever they are born, they will always leave home and attain pure precepts, journey through Buddha-lands, hear the Dharma and uphold it, fully practicing all merits, and thereby quickly realize Anuttara-samyak-sambodhi."
佛告舍利子：「若諸有情，得聞如是七佛名號，受持供養，必獲如前所說功德。所以者何？如是七佛名號、色像，皆由本願大悲所成故，令眾生聞持供養，皆獲如是利益安樂。」
The Buddha told Shariputra: "If any living beings hear the names of these seven Buddhas, receive and uphold them, and make offerings, they will certainly gain the merit described above. Why is that? The names and images of these seven Buddhas all came about through their original vows and great compassion. So when living beings hear, uphold, and make offerings to them, they all gain benefits and happiness such as this."
時，薄伽梵說是經已，舍利子等諸大聲聞，及諸菩薩摩訶薩，并諸天人、阿素洛等一切大眾，聞佛所說，皆大歡喜，信受奉行。
When the World-Honored One had finished teaching this sutra, Shariputra and the other great voice-hearers, together with the great bodhisattvas, as well as all the assembled multitudes of gods, humans, asuras, and others, heard what the Buddha had taught, rejoiced greatly, and faithfully accepted and practiced it.
