> Master Dongshan's Teaching to Master Chong on Sending His Son for Pilgrimage

> One who travels in search of the Way must keep this path in mind. Do not accept ready-made offerings and simply pass your days idly. You must nail the words "birth and death" to your forehead. Throughout the twelve hours of the day, turn your face around and seek clarity. If you just follow the crowd and waste time, when the King of Hell comes to collect your meal debts, don't say I didn't warn you. When engaging in spiritual practice, you must take stock daily and examine yourself hourly. From the first drum roll until the second watch of the night, observe where you feel weak, where you slip, and where you maintain your footing. If you proceed in this way, you will surely reach the day of arriving home. There are some who practice the Way but neither read sutras nor bow to the Buddha. As soon as they sit on their meditation cushion, they doze off. When they wake up, their minds race with random thoughts. The moment they get up from the meditation bench, they start socializing. If you practice like this, even until Maitreya Buddha descends to the world, you will never get a foothold. You must rouse yourself with vigor, raising up the word "No" (wu) with all your might. Day and night—three periods of day and three of night—struggle with it. Do not settle into the comfortable state of "no concerns," nor cling to sitting rigidly on your cushion. You must keep it lively and moving. If countless scattered thoughts arise, never fight them head-on—the more you fight, the more frantic you become. Many people, not knowing how to advance or retreat, get stuck here, cannot break free, and end up insane, ruining their entire lives. Instead, when thoughts arise, gently set them down. Take a turn, walk around the room, then return to your seat. Open your eyes, clench your fists, straighten your spine, and raise it up again as before. You'll feel a coolness, like adding a ladle of cold water to a pot of boiling soup. Practice in this way. Over days and months, you will surely reach the day of arriving home. If your practice hasn't yet taken hold, don't give in to worry—the demon of worry might enter your mind. If you feel it's easy, don't give in to joy—the demon of joy might enter your mind. The various ailments are beyond description. If there is an experienced elder brother in the community practicing the Way, by all means, seek his guidance often. If not, read over the words of the patriarchs on spiritual practice once more, as if meeting them face to face. Rare is it nowadays to find someone who truly follows this path. Press on, I urge you. I look forward to the day you break through the lacquer bucket and return to scratch my back for me. With my deepest entreaties, I commit this to you.
