> Precept 27: Traveling in the Same Boat as a Bhikkhuni

> The Buddha was staying in Śrāvastī, at the Jeta Grove in the garden of Anāthapiṇḍada. A group of six monks and nuns formed a partnership and traveled together on the same boat. This caused disturbance as before, so this training rule was established.

> If a monk and a nun arrange to travel together in the same boat, whether going downstream or upstream, except for crossing directly to the other shore, it is an offense requiring confession.

> When people travel together on a single boat, it means they share the same fate—whether safe or in danger—with no separate intentions. This is called forming a shared bond. "Going with the current" means traveling downstream. "Going against the current" means traveling upstream. At that time, a benefactor north of the Vārāṇasī River invited both groups of monks to a grand gathering. The monks did not dare to share a boat with the nuns, so they were unable to receive the food offering. Because of this, an exception was made for direct crossing. The measure for this offense is as follows: - If crossing half a \*krośa\* (about one mile), it is a \*duṣkṛta\* (minor fault). - If crossing a full \*krośa\*, it is a \*pāyattika\* (offense requiring confession). The six considerations regarding perception toward a nun are the same as before. If a fully ordained man travels with an unordained woman, or an unordained man with a fully ordained woman, or if both are unordained and travel together in a boat, all commit a \*duṣkṛta\*. There is no offense if: - Avoiding dangerous shoals or sandbanks, - The rudder breaks, - The boatman does not follow instructions, - Staying close to one bank, - Or if any of the eight emergencies arise. In such cases, whether going upstream or downstream, there is no transgression.
