> Precept Thirty-Two: Accepting Food Beyond One Offering

> The Buddha was staying in the city of Shravasti, in the garden of Anathapindika. At that time, a lay supporter had established a residence to provide for wanderers, ascetics, Brahmins, and travelers from all directions. The group of six monks then stayed there for an extended period. When the householder was away, they indulged in improper speech, speaking inappropriately to the woman who served the food. The householder, having learned of this, gradually began to offer them coarse food. Furthermore, they got into a fight with the wanderers, which led to worldly criticism and caused trouble as before. Therefore, this training rule was established.

> If a monk stays at a non-Buddhist's residence for more than one night and one meal, except due to illness, it is an offense requiring confession.

> This rule was established by the six groups: one night, one meal. If one stays overnight and eats again, it is an offense of wrongdoing, as well as a pācittiya offense. If one stays here but eats elsewhere, it is an offense of wrongdoing. If one stays elsewhere but eats here, it is a pācittiya offense. If one stays for multiple nights and eats, with the intention of eating, etc., there are six considerations of mind: the first is serious, the middle is light, and the last two are not offenses. Furthermore, because Shariputra encountered illness, eating is permitted and not an offense. If it is a gathering of the community, or relatives, friends, or donors sincerely offer food and urge one to stay, or if it is at a temple, a bhikkhu's dwelling, or a place of wandering ascetics, all are not offenses.
