> Reverence to the Honored One

> According to the Buddha's teaching, when approaching a sacred image or a revered teacher, one should remove footwear as a mark of respect, unless due to illness. It is the proper conduct to walk barefoot, and shoes should not be worn lightly. The right shoulder is to be uncovered, with the robe covering the left arm; the head should be without a turban or head covering. This is the constant practice for daily activities. When traveling elsewhere, it is acceptable to dress slightly differently based on circumstances. In cold regions, it is permissible to wear short boots, and other types of footwear may be worn as needed according to the situation. Different regions have different climates—some warm, some cold. While the holy teachings generally set these standards, circumstances may require flexibility. In the bitter cold of winter, it is reasonable to wear clothing to preserve the body's warmth, while in spring and summer, the monastic precepts should be followed precisely. It has already been clearly taught that one should not circumambulate a stupa while wearing shoes or sandals. Similarly, it has long been established that certain types of footwear must not enter the incense hall. Any deliberate violation of these rules amounts to stubborn defiance of the Buddha's golden words.
